Do Nothing colors
« on: April 08, 2007, 08:51:41 AM »
Thanks for the replies on colors for crappie.  These are the colors I have made so far.  I still don't have the 2 color thingy.  I sent some baits to Just4Fun to practice with.  He showed me pics of 2 colors he did with his new plastic welding tool.  I am too cheap to buy a tool so I guess I'll keep on one color for a while.  Fish have been caught on every color in the box. BTW:  The white bass seem to like them as much as crappie do.  Tomorrow I think I will give some smallies a chance on them.

Thanks GMAN.  I really don't fish for crappie more than a few times per year.  I don't know their habits except in spawn time and winter off channel holding.  I made this more because of the challenge to start from scratch and see how I could do it cheaply.  So far I have about $20 besides my time and have made several hundred because I can pour them 24 at a time.

I really had to McGyver some stuff to pull it off.  If you are interested, I might post some pics of the process sometime.

is that just a round stick worm with the tail cut off at a diagonal?  I dont do much crappie fishing either except when they are bitting real good.

You fashioned a 2 piece mold for that correct?

What I did was buy some of the baits.  I bought a 3' alum rod the size of the baits.  I drilled a hole in it and filed it down to the shape I wanted (took 5 attempts to get it right).  Then I bought a 3' brass tube that the alum rod would fit inside.  I oiled my alum bait and put it in a piece of the tube.  Next I cast a lead plug which is the shape of what the do nothing isn't.  I made about 30 of the plugs and cut 24 lengths of the tubing.  I tried off and on for a couple of months but I couldn't get 1 of 20 to pour.  The plastisol set up before it got to the tail.

The last part of the process was getting plastic cattle syringes, drill out the ends and JB Weld smaller brass tubes into the end of the syringes.  It make a real good injector for $.69.  I now get 20-22 on average per pour.

It was complicated and frustrating but finally rewarding.
