First nothern pike
« on: September 15, 2008, 04:52:10 PM »
Caught my first northern pike @ 17-18 inches.

Went to get the camera the thing wiggled loose cutting the line with those razor sharp teeth and went right back into the water...with my lure still in his lip.

Mind you i was a little scared handling it and didn't have the greatest grip on it.

Kinda sucks no picture, but still a great day compare to the entire summer i was having.

The thing about that pike is you have a story to remember it by now! Congrats on the 1st pike, grimlin!

Isn't a chain pickerel kin to the northern pike? If so, I usually catch one or two of those early in the year every year on a buzzbait.

Nice job,..pike can be a lot of fun!  Some fight like crazy and they don't stop even when you get them in the boat.  And they are not nearly as spooked by boats as bass are,...they will chase stuff and nail it right next to you as you're pulling the bait out of the water sometimes!! :D :D 8)

Way to go Grimlin. I've never had the opportunity to fish for pike yet but want to someday.

I've had more than one chewed up hand because I'm to cheap to let them have my lure but they are fun to catch congrats.

Baseballfatty,

I catch pickerel all the time on Lake Tuscaloosa.

The rip rap on the north side of hwy 43 bridge, and the rip rap on the north side of the Tierce Patton bridge is usually loaded with them.

It takes a really long pickerel to add up to any weight at all.  Most I catch wouldn't weigh a pound.

I have only caught two of three I guess out of the lake. Pickensville is where I've caught most of them but Lock 7/8 have some too. Maybe 3lbs. is the biggest I have caught.

they seem to be real hard to hook up. so if your fishin shallow grass and getting lots of short hits, it may be pickerel.

Yea "Jack", Pickerel, same thing.

What's strange to me is our pickerels in Lake T do not look like the Chain Pickerels that you see elsewhere.  All I have caught have pretty much been one solid silver color, with very little markings at all.  I wonder if they are some sort of sub species.

Wow Buzz a 3 lb pickerel is really big (long I should say, lol)!!

Cool.  All throughout the year.  Seems to always be around the rip rap.
