First Outing for River Salmon This Year - 11-26-08
« on: November 28, 2008, 10:02:18 AM »

It felt so good to be out fishing again since my ankle has healed enough.  Although I only had 1.5 hours to fish which isn't much I went anyway because the urge was too great to not go.

Because of the reports of nailing chum salmon with the Jig and Float, I was going to give this method a try initially.

I got to the clearing at about 10:50 AM. First observation was that everyone was fishing the Jig and Float. The second was that the only action on the water were chum rolling but no hook ups. I suppose there was some considerable action earlier becauseI overheard comments of catching 10, 15, chums.

Changed my mind at the last moment and decided to drift with corkies instead and I did.

An hour later no hookups at all for anyone.  People in the primo spot started clearing out and I finally had my chance. I grabbed the spot just downstream of the little bush that sticks out and after ten minutes felt the take. BAM! And whew! I wasn't going home skunked.

It was an average sized chum, nicely hooked in the pallette. Thus, no need for a picture. Okay, my cell phone died and I couldn't take the shot.

I was back at the parking lot by 12:30 to take care of some items on the honey do list but I wish I could have stayed longer.

The thing I learned today was about water speed and how it can influence the tactics used.  It was fairly slow such that even a 3/4" piece of pencil dragged in the fastest section. I had to cut it down to just under 1/2" to get a fair drift (Thank goodness a Curado can handle that weight). The float and jig method would not have had this issue at all. The reason I didn't use it was because everyone else was while I was there and in the time frame I was there it wasn't productive; and they might not become receptive again to it during my short fishing window. I gambled offering them something different just might work and I just needed the opportunity to move into the spot they were located. Still a "green" river angler on the Green River or any river, with a lot more to learn.

The guy next to me switched to corkies.

I'm glad you are getting out.  Now how about a little clarification for us mid continent guys.

chum salmon ?
Chum is what we do to attract fish like throwing corn in the top of a hole to get trout to come up.

drift with corkies ?
A corkie would be a really old fashioned bobber made of cork.

No problem, JM. I apologize for presuming the some of the terminology used would be known.

Chum Salmon
This is one of the species of salmon. There are Chinook , aka King, Coho, aka Silver, Chum, aka Dog, Pink, aka Humpie, and Sockeye, aka Red.

The name just happens to be the same as chum, but it that is coincidental. There is no chumming involved in catching a Chum Salmon .

They are known for their brutish and powerful fight. The closest thing to it in the bass world would be a Smallie on steroids.

Here is a link to some great information:
http://www.salmonnation.com/fish/meet_species.html

Drifting with Corkies
A Corkie is an egg-shaped buoyant lure that many people use to target steelhead and salmon in rivers when fishing from the bank. Some people refer to Corkies as bobbers because they float. I don't know why it works, but it does.  Here is a link to more information and a couple pictures as to what it looks like. Here is a link to more information and photo 1 is a pickture of a hook, green yarn, and a corky.

Now it all makes sense to me.  You have to remember that I am an illiterate redneck from the Ozark hills we just got electricity last month.  The farthest I have ever been away from home was the time I rode a mule to Springfield to buy a boat. :D

My salmon are already deboned and skinned so I don't know the types. ;D

Thanks for the enlightenment IB.
