Fishign Orlando?
« on: January 20, 2007, 05:52:25 PM »
Alright, so with all the talk of the "majestic" fishing down in Florida, While planning a trip for Spring break, I thought hey why not go see what all the fuss is about. So, I will be in Orlando (have to stop by Disney World :) ) For 3 days. April 1st 2nd and third. either that or March 31st, April 1st, and 2nd. Well, I was thinking hey, it's new land to me, I'll be needing to research and find a good guide. So while I look around, do any of you know of any good lakes/reservoirs/fishing areas in or near Orlando? What should I bring? Would my Medium Action St.croix avid do? Should I spool up with braid? And do you guys know of any good guides with nice prices down there? I'm talking like less than 200 bucks, or if around 200 then atleast for a good ammount of time. So far only on i found was 250 for 4 hours... I had 3 hours on the Susky for 75. Better yet, anyone live in the area? Thanks

Hey cranky!

I hear where you're coming from and think you've made a great start to planning for your time down there. Looking around on the various sites is how I would normally do it, and will probably result in answers to your questions...after all that's how most anyone would do it these days.

Since you still have some time on your hands (well done btw!) I'm replying with the hopes of getting you to consider and maybe explore other possibilities or ways to get out on the waters around the Orlando area for far, far less $$$!

I'm thinking fellow forum members may have room in the boat. Now I know it can be a bit hairy and/or awkward to say the least when it comes to making such arrangements, and not to mention the concerns Dad and Mom will have, but based on your experience in the forums you visit, there's possibly a level of okay'ness with given members that you may have gotten to "know". My hope is there's an Orlando-area based fellow-member out there that would really enjoy taking you fishin' and wouldn't want ya to pay.

An important point of all of this and regardless whether it turns out to be a pay thing with a vendor or a freebie with a fellow fisherperson...Dad and Mom will want to know EXACTLY what's up and how things came about. Wouldn't you if your kid (many years from now I hope)   did such a thing?

My other point (if you will) is don't get discouraged if it works out that for some reason or an other you simply find that you can't get on a boat. Let?s say that in such a case you'd only be able to fish surrounding lakes and ponds from shore while you're down there. All is NOT LOST! If you know where you guys are staying you can check the area out with Google Earth and plan an alternative around the ponds/lakes that are relatively close. Don't forget there's usually great fishing in Florida from shore, just watch out for them there hungry gators  !!!

OK, well I've been doing my research and yeah, I did check out goole earth yesterday... Orlando looks as if somebody just decided to take a few lakes and scatter them all over. We still don't know where we are staying, but should know in due time.
Disney does have some nice spots, and guides, but as mentioned. At a price.

I also know Toho is around that area, I think that'd be the trip of a life.

Duster- your views are exactly the same as mind, and I defintely would choose to fish with a fellow angler rather than fork out big bucks forr a guide. I would chip in a few bucks for gas though, it's the right thing to do for having someone take you out. So far, however, there seems to be no members on BDO, bassfishin.com, or here from that area. I'm thinking to remember if any of the members are from around there, But I will have to find the exact location and see who's around. Chances are my dad will be staying with me whatever I do.

I'm fine with shore fishing, I've been doing it all of my life. If I can't get a guide, or even just a boat, I'm thinking I'll fish of the disney lake dock. I'm sure I'll be able to do something. Maybe bring an UL combo as well, for some panfish. As long as I don't come across a gator, I think I'll be fine. As long as
1. I don't get skunked
2. get atleast some size
3. have fun :)

As to equipment, I'll be bringing my avid. I still have the tube it was shipped to me in, so I could use that to transport it. Then I've got my new shimano slade. I don't know If I will respool it with Cajun or keep that random brand on, But I'll be testing it before I go. as to baits, I'm thinking senko type baits and maybe a few cranks.
um... hi?

Wow  :o .  I took a look at the link you provided to checkout the prices at WDW.  The prices are crazy (steep) compared to the amount of time they allot you.  The Bass Nitro Excursions package prices are even more rediculous (imho) for a couple of hours on a boat.  It would be cheaper to purchase an inexpensive rig while there and find a place to bank fish all day at your leisure.   Of course, I'm a cheap-skate when it comes to packages offered by places such as WDW.   ::)

Hope your plans come together and you have a good time during Spring Break, whether you fish or not  :)

Yeah I thought these prices were a tad high... I really don;t know what they're worth. I've been on one guided trip, and that was 75 bucks on the Susky for 3 hours. That says something. I doubt I get a guide from Disney, but I'll be fishing around there. I mean I would much rather another St.croix and a stradic over a guide for 4 hours.
Edit-
ok so on another board is one person from Oviedo, who may have the time to meet up, but he is into salt, adn that would be tuna season time. Then another, who might have time in st. augustine. Then, I found a guide who frequents a few forums, capt.gene, who charges 100 bucks for 1/2 a day. not bad at all. The thing is, I gotta talk to him about bringing my dad. I don't know If I'm allowed to go on a guided trip alone (im a minor), so If my dad comes he wont fish, btu I'm wondering if the 2 person cost would apply.

If you'll send me a pm w/ your email Cranky, I'll keep you in mind if I'm available ... I'll know more as we get closer to the time you'll be here ... my boat only holds 2 people, but your dad could hang out on shore ... There was an article in March 2006's BassMaster magazine, that tells of all the fishing holes available in the Orlando area ...  8)

Here's a guide that's local to that area ... his rates look pretty fair and he's the type of guy that is willing to share his knowledge w/ others ...  8)

Yeah, I know him. He posts on bassfishin.com . Unfortunately, my father isn't willing to do that price. I know Captgenefl, on a few other forums, does have lower rated though. No matter what, I just have to make sure I fish one big waterbody with someone who actually knows what they are doing. It would be an invaluable knowledge experience and a great memory.
