Flyfishing
« on: December 07, 2010, 05:28:17 AM »
Am I the only one on this forum? I've looked over most of the posts and 0 entries on fly fishing. I've caught large mouth bass, small mouth bass, blue gills and trout on home tied flies. There are those who go after carp, tarpon, salmon and many other species with flies.

I do fly fish.  I even make some of my own flies.  I dont fly fish often, when I do its mostly for trout or panfish.  Lots of fun catching a 2-3lb trout on 1-2lb line.

Welcome aboard.

Any fish I hook is fun in my opinion. However some pan fish have been so small I yank the fish clean out of the water when setting the hook. Feel kind of silly when that happens. A good size pan fish has a lot of fight in it. Trout is somewhat a recent experience for me. Went twice this year to Douthat State Park in Virginia and out of 6 days on the water had one where I was catching both rainbow and brown trout. That was a blast.

I laugh every time I do that.  I bet that fish is thinking "all I wanted was a little nibble."

My favorite fish to catch is a brown.  Those fish are just beautiful and put up a great fight.  Problem for me there isnt many around.  Mostly rainbows.

What fly do you typically use?  I typically use a scud or thread jig.

The browns and rainbows were biting on a gray #14 scud. They also took a worm imitation that I had tied as a pan fish lure. That was tied on a #12 Gama hook with orange ultra chenille.

Biggest surprise to me was that brown trout have teeth. Reached for the forceps real quick with the first one I landed.

was that a San Juan worm look alike?

LOL,  Yeah they do.  Did the fish get ya good?

A dry fly that has worked well for me is a Mosquito imitation.  Some reason they tear it up.  To me it wouldnt be worth the effort but I guess a trout sees it differently.

No, the teeth never got  me. I saw them while it was still in the net. Got the forceps first.

No, it wasn't a San Juan imitation. I used a short tail with buck tail, wrapped the chenille round the hook and dubbed a creme collar.
