Identify this fish
« on: December 29, 2006, 06:46:13 PM »
My wife caught this one at City Park Lake today, using a nightcrawler suspended under a bobber.  It's about 7" long, and I'm really not sure if it's a Spot or a SM.   :shrug

Oh, and I zeroed, with no bites at all.   ::)

I believe that crab is right about this one.
Although I call them Illinois Bass. Never had one in the boat until I took my buddy from Illinois fishing. He caught several.

Thanks guys.  First Rock Bass I've seen come out of that water.  We threw him back, so hopefully we'll see him again this Spring/Summer when it's a little bigger   :)

Rock Bass=Ambloplites rupestris
Warmouth=Lepomis gulosus

Both though are typically called Goggle Eye's by most, but I think yours is the Warmouth version of the Goggle eye.

Kentucky Bass = Spotted Bass, completely different animal

Here's the original pic before cropping & zooming-in.  You can see that the water is real clear now and the weeds have laid-down/gone dormant, but they'll be back and real thick once warm weather returns.  Fishing plastics rigged weedless is almost a must when fishing from the bank, and you'll still drag-in a bunch of vegetation on almost every retrieve.  I can cast a topwater a real good distance and will still snag weeds with the trebles when the weeds are growing well.
