Need Help Identifying this fish caught in AZ
« on: November 16, 2007, 03:08:43 PM »
I caught several of these fish in a small creek near the Verde River in AZ.  Can anyone identify it?  I thought it was some kind of trout at first, but the dorsal and tail fins don't match up.

You can see the 1/16 oz rooster tail for size reference.

Thanks for looking...

Thanks for the input, but all the whitefish pictures I've looked at have a second dorsal fin near the tail fin (not sure of the proper term for this).  This fish does not have that.  I've never heard of any whitefish in AZ either.  Anybody else have any ideas?

With the fin arrangement in mind it looks like some sort of chub, or maybe a shiner. Headwater, Boneytail, River, Creek, Gila...appears to be many slight variations as far as coloring goes. Gila is my best guess since they are native to the area, the most anyway.

Thanks for the input everyone, keep it coming.

I've ruled out the boneytail chubs as they don't even come close to the description, and I believe its too large to be any type of shiner.  The body doesn't match the shape of any other chubs I have seen.  The closest match I've found is the headwater chub, http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/conservation/documents/HeadwaterChub_001.pdf

Its really hard to find pictures of any of the chub sub species, so if you can find them post em up so we can figure out what this thing is.  I especially need pictures of river, creek, Gila, and more headwater chubs.  Thanks again for the help.

Here are the pics. All you have to do is click on your search engine and type in your objective. Then go through the listings until you get one with a pic. This took me 5 minutes. Hope it hellps you ID the fish.

I've spent a lot of time on various search engines looking for a match.  Its not that I can't find pictures of these fish, I just can't find QUALITY pictures of them.  Most of them are very bad pictures or sketches.  Some are taken of the fish when they are very young, so they aren't much help.  I still haven't found a satisfactory match though...

I caint get the url to work here but arizona united anglers site has a photo list of species in arizona. It says that the roundtail chub are numerous in arizona. I found a very very like picture somewhere yesterday but cannot re-find it ;D It was a chub but I was going to look around some more then had to dart out the door, when I got back I didn't remeber what it was called. Other than a chub. It even had the light colored lateral line and the blotches. The yaqui chub in some photos are real close, not sure of the size possibility though. Gonna look up sonora chub now.

Go here (found one that had better pics)and look at Virgin Chub way down the list...see whatcha think!

http://www.azgfd.gov/w_c/edits/hdms_abstracts_fish.shtml

I think we have a winna here!

http://heritage.nv.gov/images/tnc/gilsem80.jpg

That thin line running the length(lateral line I take it), to me, is the greatest clue. As well as, the overall coloration in this particular picture.

The one I spoke of, about not remembering it's name, is still out there somewhere and looks alot like it too.

BB...just trying to help.

Thanks for the input buzzbait, but I don't believe that fish is a match.  The color is way off, the body shape doesn't match, and the head isn't bony like that fish.  My fish has coloring all along the head.

Pay attention to my second picture.  The body does not have a sharp rise, or hump, between the head and the dorsal fin.  Look how flat the transition is on my fish compared to all the chub pictures.   Although, the fin arrangement is similar to most chubs.  My fish is also much darker than most Arizona chubs.   I'm thinking this might not be a chub, at least not any I have seen yet.

It is a match too! You've just set the hook too hard and jerked the hump out of'em! ;D

That alone tells me that it's probably a common species/sub-  for that area or you would've only caught maybe one.

There are a few shiners with the aft fin like that. Hey, maybe it's a juvenile of a larger chub specie???

Look up Yuqia(sp)chub or shiner. I don't have time right this minute.

Later!

BB ....Maybe it's a "goosehunt minner" ;D
