New casting technique?
« on: October 04, 2008, 10:12:40 PM »
I'm gonna sound like an idiot for this one....

Does anybody here swing their lure in a circle and let go @ the 180 degree point?Which would be that the lure is actually at the lower part of the swing and seems to enter the water silently. As apposed to a regular overhand or side cast as i usually do.

I was casting crankbaits this way and it sure seemed to be alot easier to cast them doing this.

Is there a name for this cast or did i just make something here?

If your swinging it over your head; that is called the lasso cast.
If your swinging it to the side; that is the Tilt-a-Whirl cast.

Are you talking about swinging it at the end of your rod? I saw KVD do this and not only could he hit his target but it entered the water without so much as a splash. He was doing this with a jig; I would think that doing this with a crankbait would mean your not going for distance?

I've tried that method and never been able to accomplish it correctly.  If fishing open water. I do the long arching cast that I call the bombadier/kamikaze cast.  The lure enters the water straight down in an aerial attack, lol.   ::)      :o

yeah pondhopper,I'm swinging it at the end of my rod in a sideway cast, luring rotating in clockwise direction 6-8" of line hanging out.Trying to get in tight corners,so i really wasn't going for distant. It worked pretty good....kinda amazed how easy it was.

Hey Grimlin, Larry Nixon is well noted for a cast much like what you have explained. The reason he does this, he explained once, was because he makes so many casts in a tournament day that it helps him accomplish that with less body movement so it tires him out less throughout the day. He also  casts with a shorter rod at times in a circular motion bringing the whole rod down and around with a circular flick of his wrist. Denny Brauer is another that at times casts in a circular motion but it's mostly shot out straight from you. The line/lure is set to like pitching it except a few inches shorter, flung out as if to pitch it, brought all the way over head,, down and back out in a full circle which accomplishes a no hands, high speed pitch cast. ;D I saw him do this in a siminar several times in a classroom quite a few years back. In fact he even went around twice a few times, as if we were to take notice  :o I think he got our attention the first time. ;D

Wow,i never knew.  Pretty neat!

JackJ i've been doing it with spinnerbaits now too.

I think it kinda helps rest the casting arm a bit as buzzbait explained.Making 200-300 casts can get tiring...probably why i started casting like that.

I throw jigs like this a lot, with pinpoint accuracy and no splash, I always just called it an under roll cast ??? Use it for spinnerbaits worms etc.

Isn't this aka the roll cast? It is indeed a pretty cool casting technique to execute.

I think I first saw KVD casting that way when I was just learning how to use a baitcaster,....now i use it about 95% of the time with all baits sometimes even with swimbaits.  I just always referred to it as a roll cast!

Note:  A year or two ago,..I messed up my elbow doing this kind of cast backhanded with heavy jigs all day long while in a cold-weather tourney.  Although, I blame the reel I was using at the time (which had a cast-button on the side-top of the reel instead of a normal one in the back.. which caused me to palm it kind of funny..)) the tendonitis has never completley gone away,..so just be careful and always "listen" to your body when it begins talking to you! ;) 8)

It's called a ROLL CAST and it's what I use 90% of the time.
