Should have caught something here
« on: March 06, 2008, 08:39:39 AM »
I was in a tremendous school of shad along a bluff up the Sac River.  All of a suden the shad were disbursed and fish were in them.  I couldn't get anything to take my secret do nothing.

I couldn't get a bite here either.

Gman in the top one like stated I was in a big school of shad.  Sometimes they were so thick it would change the reading on the df.  Then the shad were seperated (middle of pic) and there were fish.  I fished all around the area as well as straight down and couldn't get anything to bite.

The second shot was down by the dam on Stockton yesterday.  I was working the rip rap with a tube when I passed over some fish.  I cast out and worked the tube (zig zag line) all around and back to the surface.  No Bitey. :o

Yes and shad.  What you can't see is that I have upper limits set so the top 7' of the water column isn't in the picture at all.  There were probably more of everything closer to the surface.

Jigman, you may do this already, dunno? But my FIL use to fish lake martin here in bama FOR suspended fish. He would use a crappie sized(2.5") chart/blk flk (or red flk) grub on hand poured jigheads less than a quarter ounce(much like the Kalin's darterhead jigheads except with a little smaller hook). He could catch them when no one else could. He regularly caught good chunks with nothing more than yhat either. This was with momo and spinning gear in open water. Did he have any fishless days? ....of course he did! but it may be worth a try. I will say this. It's the way he worked it that nelped most. pendulum(cast and swing down)(this was usually on tapered bank staright at them), and (cast)drop to the zone and reel slowly in zone til under you (parallel)

Keep these pics coming. I may learn something from them.

Thanks!

That has got to be the most aggravating thing in the world; all them fish and not a bite! The worst thing is that you know these fish were feeding.
I think it was J4F that post this the other day; watching a
