Surprise Catch
« on: June 21, 2010, 08:32:52 AM »
Baseballfatty and I went fishing Sat night till about 2:30am.   We catch a few dinks, and one decent one, and as my luck goes I let a really big fish that I fought for about 5 minutes break me off at the boat. (Guessing it to be about a 5 or 6 pound spot)

Next cast after the big fish broke off I caught this one.  I thought I had another big bass when it started stripping my drag, fought it for about 10 minutes.  It wouldn't fit in my net and I tried to get Kevin to lip it and hold it up so we could get a good picture but for some reason he wouldnt....

That's thar is why I carry those big long pliers in my bag we use at bankhead. One size fits all (fresh water species).  ;D

I'm not sure I would have used the 12 inch pliers. This thing had a snout the size of my leg and it was full of teeth!!

I wish now we would have got it in the boat, just so you could see how big it was.   I think we could of grabbed the mouth and held it together like an alligators.  ;D

From a "how to" article I read ......

"8-  Assess the fish when you feel the tension on your line. Very large fish will require a substantial fight to land, and you may find it necessary to adjust your drag to wear it down. Try to keep the fish steered away from logs, brush, or other snags to keep him from becoming tangled, where you will almost certainly lose him.

9- Fight your fish until it is exhausted. Never try to force even a smaller gar into the boat while it still has fight left in it. The Alligator Gar has been known to bite aggressively in self defense. For very large gar, it may be best to gill gaff them, so that the head (and teeth) can be steered away from occupants of the boat before bringing it aboard.

10- Be extremely careful if you choose to release your catch. Removing a treble hook from a mouth full of needle like teeth requires a very long-nosed pair of pliers, and cutting the line will leave the treble hook embedded in the fish's mouth, leaving it little chanceof survival.

That's why I dung them out of my tool box and put them in the boat....cause it said to ;D

8,9,and 10 are the very reasons my line would “break”! :o

From what I read, their gills are razor sharp too. Personally, if I hook one up and can't get the hook out easily I am going to cut the line.

Arent most hooks made to rust off after a week or 2 anyways?

Also next weekend I'm going out to reelfoot lake. I wont be catching any alligator gar but I will be for sure trying to catch some regular gar. If I get any I'll post some picture. That is if the little hole is still there.
