The clam before the storm
« on: September 07, 2008, 10:09:59 PM »
Went out today on the river system with a H&H spinnerbait slowrolling the bottom.A 1/2 pound clam jumped on my spinner as i fought like it was a 5 pound fish.

Soooo disappointed! :shrug

Should have brought the dang thing home and ate it....that would have shown those clams to mess with my spinnerbait again. :tick

LOL,  I caught one a long time ago.  Fought like a rock.

I also caught a long about 6" in dia and 2.5ft long.  I pulled it off a steep ledge and thought I had a monster when it went deep and planed throught the water.  One of the best fights I've had. ;D

I caught (snagged) a flat rock on KY Lake once during a tournament and in the same day I also caught a dead shad. I actually hooked it in the mouth with a spinnerbait :o

I have actually caught two of those things in my lifetime thus far, including the one E mentioned. The other one was at Holt Rez. fishing a club tourny back when I was with the Bass Trackers. I was in the process of eat'n a sammich(sammich in one hand and pole in the other.) I was workin the rod with one hand pumpin it a little bit as we drifted along. I felt a tap, it got a little heavy, so I threw down on it. Twern't nuthin there!, but I felt it get heavy again....so, I set the hook again!(thinking that 4 lb'er had come back and hit the Finesse worm all over again). Nothin!(Rats!) then it loaded up yet again!, so I set the hook one more time ;D Nothin again ,so I reeled it in to check my hook and sure nuff there was one of those on it. This one though, was the size of a Gatorade top. I felt it hit though!!

I was amazed how hard that thing hit my spinnerbait.Come to think of it i wouldn't want to stick my finger in one of them.

The one that hit was a little bigger than the size of my fist....definitely wasn't a little one.

I've caught a handful of them over the years,..usually they clamp onto my dropshot weight!   All mine were much smaller though,..you must've thought you had a good-sized fish if it was that big!! :D :D

I've caught zebra mussels when fishing Lake Erie.

That's not uncommon here as well. But i don't think i've ever seen one bigger than a penny.I hate those zebra mussels....they are the reason for nicks and weak spots on line when deadsticking baits.I don't think i can account for how many break off happened dued to those pest invasive specie putting nicks in fishing line.

One guy i know who fishes for carps won't use anything less than 80# test braid and 25# test mono when fishing a spot he know has those zebra mussels. :o
