What is your theory???
« on: March 08, 2008, 05:39:46 AM »
Over 50% of the large rainbow trout, splake and landlocked salmon that I catch in my home lake have 5 to 6" rubber worms in their stomachs. There is also smallmouth bass in the lake. I fish it almost on a daily basis and there are very few other fishermen out on the water. My first crazy question: These rubber worms are blocking the passage of food from the fish's stomach to its intestine. Can this kill the fish?? Second: Why do you think so many of the large fish have rubber worms???

I would say yes and no to the first question about killing them, I have pulled rubber worms with rusty hooks out of a few fish's uhh... bottom side passage, ::) that they were actually passing, that happened to me twice. But  have also hooked fishing line before that had a brush hog on it, not sure for how long but the thing was swelled up to the size of my hand, I'm not sure how long it takes for that kind of thing to happen.

As far as how it happens, I guess  the worms could have been stolen off the fisherman's hooks by small fish and maybe they came by and sucked them up, or they bit or broke  the fishermans line trying to get them and now they have it ???

I just read something about it the other day, and I think it was on Bassmaster.com, but not sure.  Besides what Joe said as contributing to the problem, the article also mentioned the plastics come from fisherman tossing old/torn/worn-out plastics over the side of the boat or from the shore.  Fish then come along and eat them much as they would when we have the palstics on a hook.  I've been guilty of throwing the torn baits (Tiki Sticks mostly) over the side of the boat.  Not gonna do it anymore.

Almost forgot...Welcome Aboard the site!   :)

The plastics in a fishes stomach will eventually cause the fish to loose weight because it will block some of the food absorption from what I have read.

Some of our trophy lakes down here will not let you use sinking plastics.
