Why did they quit?
« on: June 12, 2011, 11:05:50 AM »
Since my last visit, I acquired permission to another pond. It's .85 acres and is stocked with Bluegills and cats. I went early last week and tore up some nice, fat hump backed bluegills and several cats ranging about 3 pounds each.
I went back yesterday morning and got there at dawn. It didn't matter what I did, how I fished or what I offered. I couldn't get so much as a pick up. Nothin'! If I hadn't gone a few days before, I would have never believed there was the first fish in that pond.

Why do they shut down like that?

It happens.....I'm not sure I can even tell you.It happens top me a lot too....more often than I want it to.Too many variables that can shut fishing down in a snap.It doesn't take much for the fishing to just stop sometimes.

I went out last weekend and wacked smallmouth bass, yesterday I got around 4.Didn't even get half the bites I got last weekend. The water level dropped 3' and was considerably warmer

I can go from catching 300 bluegills one weekend and then next weekend I don't get so much of a sniff from anything.Fishing can be funny like that.
Magic lures don't exist.

2011 count:
Small mouth Bass:62
Largemouth Bass:23

do they fertilize the pond? That alone may be it?

Nope. The pond is on residential, not agricultural property. The only thing that gets thrown in the pond is clippings from a mower tractor they use to cut the grass.
The night before that dead morning, a weak front came through. The only thing I can think of is, that the pressure change shut 'em down.
I'm going (hopefully!) tomorrow morning and see what happens.

SIDE NOTE: My camera went south on me a week or so back, so until I can get another one, I've got no way to document the activity. Savin' my nickels!

any aeration in the pond, or weeds? Could be the cat poo and the increse in water temperature decreasing the dissolved oxygen and increse of ph levels to the point of being inactive.

could be that they just weren't hungry  ;D

Go get'em Jim!

That's the $64,000.00 question. I had a similar experience today, also a cold front. They didn't actually quit. They just didn't show up except for a few "followers" but not takers. It was frustrating.

I think you guys have identified the culprit with the change in weather. It's amazing how we respond to environmental conditions as we experience them when we step out to the  outdoors. I believe the fish have some sort of similar experience and their feeding/behavior activity reflects it. I think in this case they were sort of just on hold for a while waiting for conditions to become more favorable.
I've heard it said before that on the way to lake one should observe the animal life on the way.  For an example if the cattle are lowing instead of feeding this may be an indication the fish are not feeding. I've never tried to verify any of this but another thing I've heard is concerning the barometer. I've heard that you can get an idea of the barometer by going to the bait shop and observing the minnow tank.

I think I have heard every idea concerning why the bite is on or off ever told. I once had one of my best days when the wind was from the East. (Fish bite the least). The last one I heard; if you see bubbles behind your frog…………
Sunday morning (after a cold front moved in that night) they called for winds out of the NNE at 7. When I got to the lake it was NNW at 17! I tried a little bit of everything but caught very few fish. In desperation I tied on a old Hell raiser (shaped like a fat minnow with prop blades front and rear) and tore them up. Who would have guessed that a top water lure, after a cold front, in strong wind, would be the ticket?
I “figured” the fish would be hunkered down. I was wrong….again! ::)
