Finally getting boat to the shop
« on: February 15, 2011, 08:54:53 PM »
I was finally able to connect with the local outboard guru. He told me to bring my boat to him tomorrow. I need to have a new water pump and I might have him look at one other thing if he will have time to do it and it won't cost too much. Hopefully he will get me in and out quick so I can get back on the water.

This guy does great work. He is known to be very reasonable and caters to the fisherman first over pleasure boaters. He is fairly well known in this region for his work.  ;)

i need to stick a water pump in my outboard also. I meant to do it last fall but didn't. I better get on the list soon before they get too busy.

Bass don't eat what they don't see.

Yep, now is the time to do it so you are ready to get on the water and find the big sows.

Just got a call from my repair guy. He confirmed the water pump was bad. One blade was nearly broken off. He told me to give the motor a "bump" once in a while. He said they tend to stick and that bumping them keeps them freer especially during periods of long non-use. I brought my boat to him at noon and might get it back before five. What service! Although I can wait until tomorrow.

Ok, I did not get back this afternoon. No problem. I had plans anyway so it can wait. I did hate missing being out on the water though with highs in the 60's today.

Ah the joys of owning an all electric tin rig. I know I can’t play where you boys with the big toys play but …
Yesterday was a great day and I can feel the fishing fever starting to grow. I’ve got some minor preparations, cleaning, new line, check bearings, etc. But most of that will be done this weekend. Unlike some others I still have a job! (Can you hear the jealousy ???) ::)

You guys can save a lot of heart ache and a bunch of bones if you will have those impellers changed out every 3 years.  It only costs 100-150 bones and that is way cheaper than a rebuild or new powerhead.

Picked up my boat about noon today. He even fixed my one fender that was loose, talk about service 8) Anyway, the whole bill was $103. Any place else I would have taken it to would have been at least $50 more. And I was dead on right about the impeller being bad. It had one vane that was split clear across the end of it.

Did he say have the water muff on the intake when you bumped it over?

No. I think just doing it once in a great while is not going to hurt it. And consider this, if you live in an area with freezing temps you aren't going to hook the muff to it. And unless your boat sits there for a long time inbetween use you probably won't be "bumping" it too often. Right?

Right. I wasn't thinking of the temps when i axed i guess, since it's been absolutely b-u-t-mus around here lately. I was jus thinking that a little water on it would help "lube" it if you did crank it over and it was on the verge of sticking from lack of use.

I believe I see what you mean. That without some water it still may stick.
