Super flukes and bass gear in salt/brackish water = Fun!
« on: January 06, 2007, 10:40:42 AM »
Well, after seeing the topic in the latest Bassmaster, I thought it was good timing to add my .02 to it.  :o

I just got back from 2 weeks in Florida. I brought my bass gear intending to hit the lakes and ponds, but oddly enough spent most of my time on the beach fishing from shore with my bro's big-ol saltwater rig, and in the fingers of the Intercoastal with my bass rig.

What a blast! The thing about fishing these inland waters is ya never know what ya gonna catch. Add to that using only a 6.5' Medium rod and 10 lb test I could just hope for the best. The excitment and challenge of it all made it a lot of fun for everyone.

I lost something BIG! I've never seen my drag run out like that before. My Fuego, the little rod, and my heart got a great workout as you could imagine. I lost the fish when it ran my line into barnicles on a submerged post, but boy was the fight a lot of fun...and LONG. Best guess based on where I was, how it hit the fluke and the presentation I was using (fast and on almost topwater), and the way it fought we think it was either a snook or a redfish...grr we'll never know...if I would have simply got my butt in the water (like my brother told me to!!) I could have worked around the poles and landed that baby. Oh well, that's fishing right?!

Here's a couple shots of some other species hitting the ol super fluke:

Baby Barracuda maybe? The poor fluke was minced-rubber after this little guy! ;D

Yellow-tail Jack...what a great fight for such a little package!

There's more photos, and other species, but like a dummy I used film instead of the digital :ugly I know me, it will sit here on the counter with tens of other rolls I've yet to develop over the years  :loser But in the meantime I've got some great memories stored up and can't wait to get back there and do it all again!

That's what I like about saltwater Duster, you don't always know what you'll catch.  :)

Not there. Been to Sarasota (Siesta Key), Panama City Beach and Fort Lauderdale. I fished the beach area at Siesta Key and had some success with the Storm Wild Eye shiners. Their soft plastic swim baits in 4" size and smaller.
