6.3-1 vs 7-1
« on: December 18, 2009, 04:37:52 PM »
Tech question for you.

I have some old chronarch 100sf's and the new chronarchs that are 7.  What is the inches per turn difference?

I'm thinking for crankin I need one you your 5's.

Typically the 7:1 reels are about 4 inches per crank faster. This all depends on the spool diameter. With the Core 50MG7 it is only 2 inches per turn faster.

Chronarch 100A, 100SF, 100B 6.2:1- 26 IPT

Chronarch 100D7 7:1 - 30 IPT

Core 50MG7 7:1 - 28 IPT

I personally use 6.2:1 reels to crank with. I find too many times 5:1 is not fast enough for me out here.

Thanks Bantam1

I think your right on this.  I'd rather slow down a reel the reel 2x faster.

I use 7:1 reels for pretty much all of my bottom contact applications. Jigs, T-Rig, C-Rig, Senko, D-Shot etc; I also use them for walking baits and buzz baits. I have used them for shallow crankbaits too, but only at certain lakes. I will never go back to a 6.2:1 for jig fishing. 7:1 has changed my jig fishing forever  ;D

I look at 5:1 reels being "old school" technology. The current reels with faster ratios offer more than enough power to crank with. Originally the slower reels were designed to take some strain off the user with fishing big deep diving cranks. Now the reels have both speed and power so you can have the best of both worlds.

Cool,  my only problem is over cranking or cranking too fast.  I will have to relearn the speed.  I agree with you too.  I'll go with the 7's.

Thanks

I dont see how someone can use a slow reel for plastics and jigs.  When you need to catch up to a running fish its hard to do with a snail reel.  Funny to watch them fast crank a 5'er though. LOL ;D

I use the Curado E7 with Citica gears and the Core 100MG to crank with. Out here my fish like the cranks a little faster. I burn DD22's as fast as I can turn the handle.

hmm that's interesting.  Here for me I have to crank them slow. So slow that I can feel the thump,,,, thump of the bait wiggling back and forth most of the time.  Once in awhile they will hit a burner.

The water is too clear so they get less time to look at it  ;)

so your saying because the water is clear they cant just swim over and suck a jig or soft plastic in they have to hit it on a run

All but one of my reels are 6.2 or faster. The one is a 5.8 ABU. I tend to agree with Bantam' vision with the faster reels because you simply have better overall control across the spectrum. The faster reels take a bunch of the mishaps out of the end result imo, especially when your talking about sizble fish. There is a tremendous difference between 7.1 and a 6.3 reels. Kind of like the difference between the 3.8:1 and 4.8/5.3 reels from yesteryear ;D.

However, all reels are tools and they all come into play somewhere.

Cutbait, he's saying in clear water the faster retrieve works better because the fish don't get a good look at the bait and they hit out of reaction.

In our clear water when using cranks and other reaction baits. Jigs and soft plastics are a different story. I use them all, but I prefer a faster reel for deep cranks.
