A bad tooth or burr, maybe
« on: August 19, 2010, 07:26:55 AM »
I bought 2 Curado 200Es last week and took them on their maiden voyage yesterday.  I have never had a stock reel that would cast like they do.  I have them on Gloomis IMX 843c rods and 10# mono.  I think the line would have too much stretch for a good hookset at the end of the cast so I made shorter casts when actually fishing.

The situation I have is one of the reels though being sliky smooth on the retrieve, has a slight tick on every revolution of the handle.  I am wondering about a burr on a gear tooth and should I fish it for a while to see if it goes away.

BTW:  Yes I am a very picky person about my stuff and none of my other 20 Shimano reels have any kind of ticks in them.

Please advise.

Jig Man.. watch the line guide to see if it is in the same spot when u hear the tick..Can u feel it too? It may be a worm gear or pawl issue..

it is likely a wormgrear/pawl issue. could be the idler gears also. since you just bought them brand new, i would say return it for another one.

The tick is a total feel thing not hear.  Thanks for the tips guys I'll go get it out of the boat and have a look see.  I hate to take it back after only one morning of use because I'm pretty sure not everyone could feel this thingy.

OK I went to the boat and pulled out both new reels.  I cut the bait off the one with the tic.  I cranked the handle at different speeds and there is no tic so I guess it must be something that only shows up with a load on the reel.

I did the same with the other new reel and it seems to turn a bit easer than the one that showed the tic yesterday.

I know if I took it back with the infor I have Mike and Sharon, at the reel counter, would give me a breathalizer test for sure. :D

It could be the assist stopper pawl also. I would just take it back because it is new.

Since the last post I pulled out a couple of hundred feet of line and rewound it through a big phone book with tension.   There is no tic at all in the reel now.  I guess that I'll hold off till I fish it another time.

It sounds as if you have got that reels number; or at least addressed the problem ;D

Hoppy I sure hope so.  I don't have real deep pockets and when I spend that much on a reel I sure don't want anything but SMOOOOTH.   I sold 2 Curado BSF and 2 Citicass and was still $100 short for these 2 reels.
