it seems like the braid on my flipping stick seems to slip as in having no drag after a couple months iono what the heck the deal is

Hi cutbait.

Sounds like you didn't put a backing of mono on your spool before putting on the braid. Before spooling up with the braid, you have to tie on some monofilament and spool up enough to cover the bottom of the spool barrel (10 yards or so). Then tie the braid on to the monofilament with a uni to uni knot, then spool on your braid. Without a backing, the braid will not adhere to bottom of the spool barrel and will cause the whole spool of braid to slip almost like you have no drag. It's a must.

Happened to me when i first tried braid..I forgot the backing.You can also tape it to the spool as well.I prefer
putting the Mono backing on to save some of that braid.Half mono then fill the rest with braid.Braid can get expensive sometimes...so no need to waste that braid.

Ditto the others,....
But if you do knot the braid to the mono,..I find it's best to put a small piece of electrical tape over the knot before you wind on the rest of the braid. Otherwise that bulky knot poking through the bottom layers of braid will want to catch and snag on them,....this is especially true if you only put a small amount of braid onto the reel as I do (about 10-20yds more than I will be fishing with on my longest casts..).

Just4fun, Are you going all the way around with the tape on the spool or are you talking about just laying a small piece over the knot exactly like you've typed. I haven't used braid that much and never have covered the knot, ... thus far.

I use electrical tape and put a strip across the spool not around it. It also acts as a backlash stopper if I get crazy and cast a buzzbait into the wind.
