Reels: I have not done this yet but a friend of mine said he puts his reels in the dishwasher to clean them before oiling and greasing. He said it gets them real clean.

Rods: I have taken mine into the shower before and cleaned them before cleaning myself. It works pretty well. Now if I could get one to wash my back... ::2

Just make sure there are no loose small parts. You don't want to lose anything.

I will have to search for the site but there are some step by step instructions on the net.
I do my own and seem to have been relatively successful at it. Not really that difficult when you follow the instructions.

I clean all of my own.  What I do is take a towel or paper towel and as I take the reel apart put everything in order of how it came apart.  Reassembly is easy that way.

Since most of my reels are from Shimano, I just downloaded their readily available maintenance pdfs.  Even if one doesn't have a shimano reel, with some careful thought, one can parallel the basic maintenance steps.

Hi..............,
When disassembling your reel, keep parts in the order you removed them, following the schematic, storing them on the drop sheet. Clean the reel bu removing the spool from the main body. With a clean rag, wipe the inside of the spool and the main shaft. Next, clean the exterior of the reel body. Remove the reel handle and, if needed, clean it as well. Once the components are clean, Gribbon said the nest step is to apply, "a very thin coat of grease to the shaft. If you can, remove the drag washer sstack and clean them with a dry cloth. This is easier in a front drag reel because some rear drag reels musst be well disassembled to free up the washer stack. Apply a bit of grease, a very light film as recommended by the manufacturer's instructions, to the drag washers. some washers are not to be greased. Leather washers usually use oil. Again, read the manual. Inspect drag parts as you take them apart and clean them, if you see cracks, chips, eccentric holes, metal filings or powder, uneven wear, very thin washers, or very shiny grooves, something needs replacement. " You may also need  to add some lubricant to the other moving parts of the reel such as the bail or handle.
