Rusted Hooks
« on: August 28, 2009, 02:50:18 PM »
I opened my terminal tackle box a few days ago and every hook in it was rusted up.  Not sure what happened, but I had to throw nearly all of them away including some jigs and spinners.    Never had this happen so quickly before as the time before that when I used them they were all fine.   I had lots of small desiccant bags in it also but they didn't help.  :(

I've started keeping most of mine sealed in medicine type bottles and all of those were ok, so I didn't loose everything I had in there luckily.  Guess I will start keeping all of them in the bottles!

I think I will make some sort of box that will hold all the bottles better.

I keep them in my storage room.   I don't know what happened this time, it seemed to happen overnight.

I try to keep plastics away from them due to the salt, etc.

I wonder if spraying something like Reel Magic in the compartments will help, or hurt??  Maybe I should try some Rust Veto and see if that helps.

I am going to keep all that will fit in the bottles in them from now on, but some things wont fit.

There are several companies out there offer them.  I think Academy or Walmart sells them.

My tackle box that I had them in is a plano.  I wonder if I can get the dividers with the VCI in them for the box I have.

I guess I need to shoot them an email.

The main page on the cortec site has a "sample" form. If you got some of the de-ruster ;) you might could save the ones you tossed. Being what you are you might can get it :P.

Yes, you can get the chips, but it might not be from Plano. I searched that and found them... 'VCI CHIPS" I think it was.

That sux Jack,...you musta got water in there some way some how!!  Since I started fishing a lot in salt water this year,..I've got a whole new appreciation for the need to keep stuff clean & dry!   Luckily I didn't have to lose too much tackle before I figured that one out!! ;)

I bought a pack of Zerust made by Flambeau at BPS last weekend. They are little strips that fit in your plano boxes and they last for 2 years. I haven't tried them out because my boat is being wet sanded and motor repainted. I've been using the little silicon packages that come in shoe boxes for my protection and I haven't had any problems with rust. The only time it's happened to me is when I fish with a jig or a spinnerbait and I leave the plastic trailer on the hook. I guess the salt/water in the plastic grub trailer cause the hook to rust.

I had those little packs in mine and it didnt help :(

I didnt realize the Zerust were strips, I thought they were the dividers.  I will for sure pick some of those up when I see some.

They fit in the bottom of a plano box that is 2 sections long. It seems like a good deal, I think I paid $5 for 8 strips and they last 2 years.

Who would need 2 cans of WD-40? It would take me 20 years to use 2 cans of WD-40. My dad has had the same can since I started driving.
