Supertuning my Shimanos
« on: August 19, 2009, 10:22:57 AM »
OK, I guess I will start with the confession first. I'm the kind of guy who use a reel for one purpose. When it starts to have difficulties I put it down and pick up another one. I have in the last 3 or 4 years had some of them professionally cleaned but couldn't complain because I don't know my way around the inside of a baitcaster. I've got 5 or 6 Shimanos that are 2 or 3 years old and have given me great service. My question is this..... If I wanted to supertune my reels I would have to have it done and would the expense be worth it, would I be able to tell a difference above and beyond a regular cleaning? I'm on a rather tight budget so I will continue with these reels for some time to come and don't have any plans to replace them. Should I upgrade them with a supertuning or just clean and maintain them?

Steve several years ago I decided to supertune my reels and upgrade the drags.  It took me at least 3 hours per reel and I totally destryed one spool ($30).  I could see about 10 yds additional distance on the cast.

My carpol tunnel was giving me fits on my spinning setups so I sent one to a guy in KS.  He cleaned it and put in new bearings he wouldn't do bocas.  It was way better than I had ever done but it didn't cast my small grubs and jierks even with a gloomis rod upgrade.

Reading on this forum I decided to let Ian Shields have a couple of my reels.  He changed out the bearings with BOCAS and sent them back.  They are like supercharged now.

They cast better than my Curado superfrees.

I also bought new bearings for my superfrees and they are better but I am going to send the to him and let him go through them.

I also bought a couple of citicas which he is going to get.

He does geeat work and will be gitting them also.
