What to do about the drag
« on: August 19, 2009, 10:11:37 AM »
Hey guys, I was reading info on the links posted above about reel upgrades with bearings, and drag upgrades and it got me to thinking. Most of my fishing is for Largemouth and smallmouth. I've got 2 spinning rods in the boat and 10 baitcasters. All Shimano. I rarely ever hook up with anything over about 4 or 5lbs. The drags on my baitcasters are pretty much cranked down tight but there might be a little more room to tighten them. When I am done for the day they go in the locker and I rarely mess with the drag. I have had a few 5-7 lbs fish pull drag but it has worked fine. Am I setting myself up for problems with this routine. I've heard you should release the drag at the end of each day  and reset it each time for a new day. I never do this and I wonder how many of you bass fishermen do this as part of your regular routine in tackle  maintenance.

I have a few other questions but I will go one at a time with them.

backing off the drag releases tension in the reel and keeps the spring washers in better condition. it is good practice to back the drag off before storing your reel; but, i don't see where it is that bad for them not to. may lead to having to replace the spring washers.
