Building a plaster of paris mold
« on: July 01, 2007, 09:04:19 AM »
Things needed

One sided mold

Plaster
Pam spray
Epoxy
Container with flat bottom I built a wood adjustable one and lined it with aluminum foil
Mixing container
atleast on flat side baits
Caulk or other adhesive

The one sided mold is the easiest.

Step 1  Glue bait with adhesive down to the container and let dry.

Step 2  Lightly spray pan and baits with very thin coat of pam

Step 3  Mix plaster of paris.  Be very careful not to add bubbles into the plaster by mixing rough.  Mix till bubbles are
gone.  Then gently pour plaster over baits.

Step 4   With the spoon gently tap the top of the plaster to push all of the air out the mold for a few seconds and
smooth over the plaster and let dry.

Step 5  Remove baits and clean up mold and edges.

Step 6  Put very thin coats of epoy in and around moldings.  This gives a nice finish and keeps the baits from
sticking in the mold.  Several coats may be needed

Making a 2 sided mold

Things needed

straight edged knife
Plaster
Pam spray
Epoxy
Container with flat bottom I built a wood adjustable one and lined it with aluminum foil
Mixing container

This one will probably take you a couple tries. But hopefully the directions will save some time.
I used a frog for my first runs.

Step 1  Spray mold with pam
Step 2  Mix only enough plaster to fill the pan approx 1/2 way and put it in them mold.
This is the tough part because the consistency of the plaster must be strong enough to support the bait as you press it into the mold 1/2 way I always start with the head of the bait.  After you have approx 1/2 the bait in the mold let it dry.

Step 3  Using my wooden frame I would always pull out the molding and clean up the sides and make notches into the plaster so the mold will reset the same all the time.  Put molding back into frame/pan

Step 4  Spray the top of the bait/mold with pam and mix only enough plaster to put on the top 1/2 of the bait.  Let dry.

Step 5  I call this the finesse stage.  I remove the molding from the frame and clean up the sides with a knife.  This usually will show the individual halves of the mold.  Carefully pull halves apart.

Step 6  You will need to cut a hole in the top to add the plastic and make atleast 1 vent hole on each side of the mold.

Step 7  epoxy mold.

If you find easier ways let me know and I will modify this post.  This is how I make them.
