Custom Spinnerbait Heads
« on: March 22, 2011, 03:30:13 PM »
Hey guys,

Newbie here from MA. I was reading thru some threads in the various forums and noticed that there were a lot of spinnerbait anglers.

I'm working on making a mold out of aluminum so I can pour my own spinnerbait heads (1/4 oz, 1/2oz & 3/4 oz) and want something unique. I am trying to get an idea as to what you would look for in a spinnerbait head so I can form an opinion of my own before I start to model this on the computer and subsequently on a machine. I know this is a loaded question, but it's a start.

Any ideas and input would be very appreciative.

Thanks.

Let me ponder on this.  I'll get back to you tomorrow. 8)

Is there any certain design you want or look alike?

I actully started typing that in the OP, but where I'm a newbie here, I figured I keep it simple.

Here, I go thru a lot of vegetation with my spinnerbaits. So something streamlined/bullet head is something I had in mind. I would like a minnow shaped head and to be honest, the wally world $1 specials fit that bill (the rest of the lure I throw away...LOL).

But, you fish so many different waters/structure/cover that it's hard to get a "one size fits all" type of lure and I would, at least, like to strive for something close if at all possible.

Your a jig maker, GMAN: You have grass jigs that are great for grass, football heads for chunk rock and arky heads for wood. If you could design something that is close to being an all inclusive, what would it be? Same with spinnerbaits. A wider head spinnerbait is great for wood and brush, but horrible for vegetation. One with a bullet type head goes thru vegetation and gets hung up on wood. Would it be a great option to have an extra barb on your spinnerbait head to hold a trailer, or MEH, who cares? Hidden head versus and all exposed one? Just some of the questions that come to mind.

So, in a nut shell, the question becomes a hypothetical one: "I love the Terminator, but I wish it had this Booyah feature". It's a total "wish list" at this point. I'm just seeking input from peeps who maybe have a "wish list" of their own on the subject.

Probably got a little deeper than I planned on... ;D

After long thought on this and sleeping on it for awhile.  The best all around would be a bullet or wedge style with a flatter base on it.  Actually alot like my poisen widegap jig.   The cone angled head would pull through the weeds better then a blunt frond but the angled up flat base would help kick it up over rocks/wood.

Whatcha think?

I like it GMAN. I've been giving it some thoughts as well. I asked a few my fishing buddies the same question and I've been getting a lot of feed back via e-mail so I'm sure once I get going on the computer model some more ideas will be coming out of me. LOL

My brother in law has a machine shop so I'm hoping in the next couple of weeks or so we can get a rough mold out so I can refine from there. We'll see what happens.

Thanks for your input.

anytime.  I'll keep thinking on this one too.  I think my first idea will be my best though.   Keep me updated on progress.  If you do make this mold and need me to pour some I'll do it.

The more I see this the more I like it, it would probably easier to modify the mold than to build/machine new.

If its possible it would be alot cheaper too.

I think it would make a heck of a SB if you get the angles right for the wire
