Dragged kicking and screaming.....
« on: March 02, 2009, 03:38:11 PM »
I have been painting jigs with powder paint for over 10 years.  I have done many thousands as I used to sell them.  I have always painted them one at a time with a propane torch.

GMAN has been after me to build a fluid bed.  I thought that he would take pity on me and send me his if I procrastinated long enough.  NO SO.

Instead he emailed me complete directions for building my own.  SO I DID.

I painted a couple of dozen banana heads today.  It was soooo easy to dip them in the fluid bed and hang them in the toaster oven.  I preheated them in the toaster oven and it cut the paint time by more than 1/2 (like I need to save time).

Here are a couple of pics.

BTW:  Thanks GMAN. ;)

Cool deal Jigman.  Glad you like it.

Question for you?  What is on top of that pvc pipe?  Just a cap?

Jack,  that air pump pushes air into the paint and fluffs it up for a more even thinner coat of paint.  This way you do not get clumps or too thick of paint (waste) then it drips around the eyelet.  It helps reduce wasted paint and gives a beatter end result.

So instead of heating the jig head and dipping it into the powder, you have the powder already melted in the pot?

You heat the head in the toaster oven

Then remove and quickly dip in the powder.  The powder is almost the consistancy of flour.  What the FB does is fluff the powder like a flour sifter so it doesnt clump.  The pump is how the air gets into the powder through the bottom portion and goes through a pourus media in the bottom of the cup.  Then into the powder paint.  It basically suspends the powder in air so it doesnt compact and then become undippable.  It allows you to use alot less powder per coat.

Gman beat me to this but I am posting it anyway.

The compressor puts air into the unit (pvc coupler).  You put a cup which has a brown paper sack glued to the bottom into the coupler.  You put powder paint into the cup and turn on the compressor.  The paint starts floating and takes up a lot more space than it did before the air is mixed.

You heat the jig heads and pass them through the floating paint.  I heated them 8-10 at a time in my $5 garage sale toaster oven.  After they were painted I bake the paint on the heads.

Do I sound like an expert?

Today was my first day to try this thing out.  It is really a nice addition to my family of bait making toys. ;)

GMAN I tried something today to keep the jig eyes from being painted shut and it worked like a charm.  If you are interested I'll take a pic and explain it.

So I assume there some type of door to stick the head in that keeps the hook portion out?

Door no.  You just take the lid off of one of the paint holders and dip the jig head into the paint.

Thats a cap on there.  Its basically a open piece of pipe with a piece of paper bag on one end to allow air to flow through.    I just wear a thick glove and pull the jighead out of the oven insert a pin for the weedguard and dip it into the cup of powder.  Its simple, easier, and faster then the old jar technique.

ok now I'm really confused, I am picturing this enclosed capsule with air flowing all inside it making the powder suspend in the air, like a blizzard, that would keep it floating and you would, slide a head in through a door and wait say 2 minutes or how ever long it took for the head to be covered by the floating powder particles.

Or did I just invent something else. After reading your last post I see what your saying but don't see how the air is working.

GMAN I have tried many ways to clean out the jig heads.  I use a wire and run it through the eyes after painting but many of them still fill up when in the toaster oven baking.  You know how hard it is to get baked on paint out of the eyes.

Well today I bought modeling clay at Wally World.  I put some on the eye and painted the jig.  I baked it in the oven and guess what?  The clay melted and some of it ran on the jig heads and kept the paint from sticking.

So I decided to put just a dab in the eye and paint over it.  When the jigs were baked I took them out of the oven one at a time and ran the wire, which is shown on the oven top, through the eye.  The clay kept the paint from getting real hard and the paint came out slicker than snot on a door knob.

I'm going to try that again as soon as I get some more heads painted up.  BTW the black worked better than the brown.  Next I'm trying some white when I get some more cups made.  I got the caps at Lowe's.  They were like $.59 @.

Joe the part you see with the hose going in is an air chamber.  The cups shown are 1/2 full of paint.  You take the lid off and set the paint cup on the air chamber.  The air causes the paint to sort of float.  You take a hot jig head and swish it through the paint (1-2 seconds or less).  It comes out painted and goes back in the oven to bake.

The cans on the left labeled black and brown are just your paint storage cans right? Not part of the process.   Your actually pouring some into the white thing on the right I assume.

The pvc containers are the paint chambers that go above the air chamber.  I should have had one of them setting on top of the air chamber to make this whole process clearer.  No wonder I gave up being a teacher and went into supervision.
