Making Jigs
« on: May 27, 2008, 09:17:45 PM »
Hi Guys, I'm new to the site, but have enjoyed the posts I have read. I have a question for you guys that have been making your own stuff. I have been making my own spinnerbaits and skirts for years now, and I recently decided to start making my own jigs. I ordered a mold for swimmin jigs and I got a football head mold and started pouring. My question is this: I've been powder painting them, using a base hole pin when I pour, then glue in the weedguard at the end. Is this how you guys are doing it? Is there a better way? I look forward to sharing ideas with you guys.

Welcome Aboard!   :)

GMAN and a couple others can answer the jig-making questions.  Shouldn't be long before you get a reply   :)

Hey welcome aboard.

That is the way I do it.

I've tried molding in the weedguard and then powder painting.  Its faster but the finish isnt as durable and the weedguard looks like crap.

The best way I've found is to mold the head, debur, reheat in an oven, put pin in, dip in paint, pull pin out and put the jig on a arrow shaft.

Thats how all mine are made now.  I do use a fluid bed too.  Never go back to just dipping and stiring powder paint.

G-MAN, thanks for the info. Thats pretty much what I've been doing, except I haven't gotten a fluid bed yet, and it is still an experiment every time I heat the jigs to see when to get them just right on the paint coverage. I still get some with some pointy heads after I bake 'em cause I got the paint too thick. Fluid bed is prolly next purchase from Stamina. What kind of glue are you using to glue in the weedguards? I have been using just plain ole superglue, but I was wondering about durability, will they fall out? And sometimes I get a little white-ish residue if I get too much glue in the hole. Thanks again for sharing the info. I'll post some finished products in a day or so to get your professional opinion. :)

I use 2 part epoxy.  Something like devcon or sorts.  I tried super glue and didnt like it.  The super glue gel was ok.

Build a fluid bed it will save you a ton of $$.  I built one and it works pretty good.

What you need is

2-3" pvc pipe
a pvc joint that fits above size you pick
little aquarium pump
piece of flat plastic
valve that fits aquarium hose
aquarium hose
paper bag
nosel for hose to hook into the pvc joint.

Cut the pvc pipe into pieces about 3-4" tall and glue the bottom to the bag and trim around it.

Drill a hole in the joint and screw in nosel
take the aquarium hose few inches and hook it to the nosel and valve.  then hook a bit more to the other end of the valve and pump.

Fill the cup you just made with the bag with paint and plug in and set the valve where you get the FB to turn and the paint stays fluffy.

It wont work as nice as the 70-100 $  FB's but it will work good and only cost you about 20 bucks. You can get everything at lowes and walmart.

A couple are football heads, others are bullet heads I use for swimmin. I've been kinda trying to pattern my skirts to match Davis' Paca Chunks, which I put on a couple. The spots down here seem to really like the "Alabama Craw" in some stained water and the "Watermelon Red" in a little more normal water color. The Black n Blue is just what I like to swim.

GMan, I have been buying from Stamina, Janns, and Barlows, I haven't found just one that has all the colors I've wanted, so I been gettin it from all 3.

Jack, we have been doing OK early, (till 8 ish) swimmin a horny toad, jig, or senko in the grass in the creeks. After that, back off some and throw a crankbait. There is a point I'll tell you about you can drag a carolina rig across later in the mornings and usually catch fish all day. Its not too far from franklins ferry, but call or email cause I ain't gonna put it on here LOL :)
