New territory
« on: March 03, 2010, 08:48:30 AM »
Well, I think cabin fever is gonna overtake me even though the winter is in it's last death throes. I've decided to build some jigs. As a result I'll probably be over here more than in the past. I have to put together some knowledge and understanding that I don't currently have. I hope you guys can throw in guidelines and feedback from time to time as right now it feels not only interesting and exciting but also overwhelming.

Where to start ?
Compare jig head configurations and style,  how many are there?

Choose hooks and compare acquisition availabilities

Purchasing skirt material- I'm hoping this is one of the easier steps, LOL

Determine painting method

Acquire lead , how to do it?

I already have too many questions,

I am pretty sure I'll end up with a whole lot more than I will use so it will necessitate offering some for sale. With that in mind what type or quality of molds should I consider?

What are the pros and cons of tying the skirt vs using one held on with rubber band.

All comments are welcome and may even persuade me to reconsider, LOL!!

Oh yea, and last but not least. Stupid me, what are some of the safety precautions I need to be aware of?

I dont know anyone on this board that makes jigs. ;D ;D ;D

GF,  How much of this stuff do you own already?

Mold
Lead
Pot to melt lead
Paint
Weedgaurds

Reason I ask,  if you dont use alot of jigs a year you would be better off buying a pre made head and then building your skirt of choice.

Tying the jig there are really 3 basic ways

Rubber collar-  fast, easy, issue is heat and dry rot
Thread-     Will rot, takes along time to tie for me
Wire-   My favorite   Wont go anywhere and will last longer then the jig.

Some people use zip ties,  works but not my cup of tea.

Skirt material-  tons of places sell it in hundreds of colors.  Good luck.

Once you start,  your jig box will explode. ;D

I don't have any equipment or materials.
I am currently considering your suggestion of buying the premade jig heads. If I go this route then it will be necessary for me to quantify exactly what it is in a jig that I want, then go see if I can find it.  I want to use a paint process that ranks high in ease of application if I do the painting, but it must be durable no matter who does it. I don't even know what my options are there or which ones make sense for me.

Thanks for the response GMAN

Steve I wouldn't get into it if I were you.  There is no stopping point.  I have 12-15 molds and my last skirt order was for 1200 and I had ordered 800 before that.  I have been buying hooks in several sizes by the 1000.   >:D >:D

To put a little perspective on it:

Molds  $30-40 each
Pot      $50 at least
Lead    $2/#
Hooks   $0.25-.30 each
Weedguard  $0.10 each
Paint     $3 per oz
Heat gun   $25
Toaster oven  $40

If only you had come up with this plan a couple of weeks ago I could have sold you the molds that I sent to Ohio, Washington and Canada for a steal. ;D

GF,  you can only really save $ if you buy supplies in bulk.  Otherwise its expensive.

Powder paint is the only way to go for painting heads.  Its easy, tough, and doesnt stink.  Plus the really no dry time just cooling off time.

Jigmans prices are fairly close especially if you do not buy in bulk.  Breaking it down (sales pitch time)  you would be real close to what I sell a head for.   Then add a bit of labor in it.

Skirts are a different story.  They range 10-25cents a pad.  2-3 are common usage.  That price is pretty stable for anyone that cant buy massive amounts of them.

Hey guys, Thanks for the feedback. I've never really felt like I needed to read between the lines on this site so I'm hoping that hasn't changed. LOL

Acquiring premade and painted jigheads seems to be what I'm hearing here and a few other sources I have.  I'm all for whatever makes it easier.

Honestly making the head sucks. LOL  the fun part is making the skirt colors you want.  You can really see a jig/spinner come alive.

X2 especially with the posion tail.  If I'm having a bad day, I get a lot of flash that has to be trimmed.  I know you did a bunch of remodling on your so they would pour better.

I used to get a lot of flash when I had to crack the mold (3 penny wrappers) but I finally broke down and smoked the crap out of them so they pour pretty good now most of the time.

I fixed that issue by taking an engraving tool and etching out where the hook eye goes to fit perfectly.  Then I Jb welded the hook eay area where it goes to the shank.  I pour a 100% head almost every time.  No flashing, no cleaning, nada.  Took me a few hrs to do it but in the long run it has saved alot of time in cleaning and looks better.
