Night Crawler Harness?
« on: July 06, 2007, 02:26:01 PM »
Hi all. My name is Jason. Most people call me Swizzle. I'm looking for info on how to properly make different types of worm harnesses. Mostly for bass and walleye. The size that seems to work the best for our area is the size 2, 3, & 4 blades. I'm looking to make them in bulk. I'm hoping to make some double and single hook rigs as well as a few floaters. I do have an account with Jann's Netcraft but I'm hoping to get a few other potential companies to buy from as well. My main concerns are the size and type hooks, the type of line to use and the knots. Posted pics or links to how to tie the knots will be greatly appreciated. Thanx, Swizzle

Thanx for the info. I am just starting to get the snell knot down. I think this knot is the best for hooks in between the blade and the final hook. http://www.fishingkites.co.nz/fishingknots/snell_fishing_knots.html But I don't think it'll work for the last hook because it seems to come untied very easily? Is this because of the type of line I'm using or is it the knot itself. Sorry about all of the questions but hey if you don't ask then you'll never know. Also the line I'm using is getting stretched and distorted around the knot area even before I tighten it down. I've seen one guy that uses the Berkley Trilene XT Extra Tough. I'm using 10lb test and he uses 10lb and 12lb test. Would it make a difference? Swizzle

It could be the line streaching.  I'm not to familiar with this rig, but if it was me I'd probably try tying a polymer knot on each one.  I just dont like the snell not and never had a use for it.

I'll gave it a try. Using this video link I found as a guide line for tying it. I also went back and tried the snell knot again but added a few extra loops. I think the snell knot is gonna be the one I'll need for worm harnesses. I do remember using the polmer knot before with jigs and it is a great knot. Enjoy the video and thanx for your help.  Swizzle

How exactly is what used? The knot or the rig? If your talking about the nightcrawler harness it is basically 1 to 3 hooks that are attached to the nightcrawler with a few colorful beads and a blade in the front. The blades get attention well the bait gives them something to bite into. Swizzle

So all the hooks hook to one worm? and do you just cast it out and reel it?  or use it under a bobber? etc.

I like to use a medium sized crawler, most use a full sized crawler. I get walleyes biteing the tails off so the closer the tip of the tail is to the last hook the better chance you have of actually hooking a short striker. I usually drift it nice and slow with the smallest split shot I can use and still get it to the bottom. I place the split shot about 3 to 5 feet from the harness. With cast and retrieve fishing I move the split shot closer. Its usually used by cast and retrieve and I think its a deadly set up for slow drifting in 8 to 12 feet of water during early morning and at dusk although I have caught walleye at noon to 1pm before. I don't own a boat that would support a trolling motor or I'd use it more often. I use this alot on the bridge. I walk out to the 3 or 4th pier and drop the line and slowly walk back to shore. I hold the reel in one hand and the pole in the other with the line over my fingertip. Even the lightest bite is easy to feel. Hope this helps. Swizzle

I guess I should read all of the post before throwing a reply on here so quick. The worm or night crawler harnesses are made to hook on a single worm or a single crawler. The are kinda like fishing with a regular spinner. You wanna cast them out and reel them back in or drift fish over flats and around breaks or troll slow. Fishing them under a bobber would add a big top water action that might draw attention closer to the rig but I've never heard of anyone fishing them this way. The blade is what causes disturbance in the water and attracts the fish by displacing water as its pulled through the water. What do you guys think about adding a rattle bead to a crawler harness? that might be a cool idea especially fishing muddy water.  Try it and let us know.  I like the idea though.

It'll be a while before I do it. It will also make the harnesses cost about .30 cents more to make. I was thinking about getting the glow rattle beads but they are the same price but minus 2 in the pack. I think if I do a glow in the dark style crawler harness then I'll add those to my shopping list. Swizzle

I've seen these before or something close to it,matter of fact i had one(lost it on a snag). These things are deadly on walleyes...alot of people here use minnows as well.I think they went for like $2-$3 a rig.I hear they work better when trolling.

Crawler harnesses are excellent for drifting or trolling. I do my best to keep them on the bottom. You lose some but you nail some good walleyes and sometimes later in the day then anyone else can with lures. Swizzle
