Pourin' your own
« on: June 12, 2009, 08:22:21 AM »
Hey, after looking at pouring equipment today I think that I want to start pouring my own this winter.  Is there any cheap spots to get a senko mold, cheap small melting pot, plastic, dye, and scent?  Or does anyone have a used one they would sell me or something like that?  I have never poured plastic but I have poured lead for figurines in Germany with our German friends.

your melting pot is small pour spout metal cups and an electric burner that can be bought from walmart for about 12 dollars.

I might have some dyes I'd sell you.  No senko mold though.  I've got a few other molds in aluminum I need to sell.  ONe is a wizard and the other is a centipede mold. What all are you looking for?

I am planning on ordering a few molds and plastic this month.  Can you re-melt down plastic lures?  I am going to try to make a mold out of silicone to see if that works.

Yes you can remelt plastic, but it scorches easily and if it has salt, the salt will settle to the bottom of the pan.

Nice molds Jigman, did you ever get around to copying those swimming chunks?

Also Jigman is right, when  I first started pouring I used to remelt my senkos and powerworms, make sure you have some kind of ventilation and do not do it in the house unless you have some kind of major venting, also invest in a respirator if you are in a small area.

With the salt as jigman said you need to really keep it stirred, you need to heat it up quite a bit to get it all melted with no chunks left in it but I liked to let it cool down a little after so the liquid is a little thicker, it helps keep the salt suspended a little better.
If your plastic is to hot and like water the salt will go right to the bottom as well as alot of the flakes. Basically you have to stir really good after each bait you pour.

Another tip is to cut the old baits up in really small pieces with scissors beofre throwing them in the pan.

Wow typing that brings back memories before BassSnacks ever started, walking around to all the guys in my clubs boats and collecting their used plastics from the tourney.  ;D
