Pouring jig heads
« on: September 04, 2009, 03:40:51 PM »
I need some help. I just started pouring jigs and I'm having a problem with the lead not going all the way down to the bottom of the collar. Is it because I'm letting the lead cool off to much before I pour or what? I'm using standard lead but I'm melting it in one of those pouring latels. The ones I've screwed up are in terrible shape and unfishible. Can I just melt the lead off the hook and reuse or will it pull the finish off the hook? What would cause the lead to only cover parts of the shank of the hook?

sounds like the lead isnt hot enough.

Yes you can  melt the lead off the hook.  Be careful to not burn yourself.  I always hold the hook with pliers so my glove hand isnt close to the lead.

Your lead may not be soft enough for what you are pouring.  How are you melting your lead?  What type of mold are you using and what size jig?

Are you skimming your pot of impurities before pouring? Wheel weights are usually contaiminated something fierce if you are by chance using some of those. When I started poring my own bullets I went to cracker barrel and bought a cast-iron ashtray/skillet with the logo in the bottom of it. I like using it myself. As you can tell though, I was poring them by hand and not a pouring system. I heated my mold and I also sprayed my hooks, mold and mold pins with wd-40, which seemed to help for some odd reason!?

Well, I'm was using one of those pouring latels (looks like a big cast iron spoon) but I bought a melting pot off cabela's. The lead I used was bullet weights. It poured pretty good on the first one but the other 4 or 5 didn't pour worth a crap. It's a shakey head mold with 5 1/8 once shakey head slots. GMAN, as stupid as it sounds I didn't even think about using a glove and yes I burned all of the hair off mr right hand!! That didn't feel so good. ;D

When you are pouring small stuff like the 1/8 oz your mold should be heated because the lead really cools fast.  I put my mold on top of the lead pot and heat it as the lead heats.

You will also get a better pour if you flux your lead.  Bees wax is probably best but I just use candle wax.

I'm sorry to sound like an idiot but I'm new to the game. What do you mean "flux your lead"?

First off fluxing is adding a substance that aids flowing and helps prevent formation of oxides in the lead.

You heat your lead then put in a marble size piece of wax.  It will melt and smoke.  If it doesn't flame up then you light it.  All this time you should be stirring the lead with a long spoon and be sure to wear gloves.

Keep stirring until the fire goes out.  Then you can skim off the crud that has floated to the top and you will have a pot of shimmering lead.  It will pour a lot better.

Another thing you can do to help small baits pour is to use a candle and smoke your mold.

Jig,

Does smoking the mold make the lead flow a little smother? I should have my lead pot soon. When I get the melting pot I'm going to put all of this knowledgeable use to work. You guys are great, I'm really thankfull I have such good people on here that will help you and not just shun you off when someone asks questions!! Many thanks guys!!!

When that pot comes in I'm going to be a shakey head pouring machine!!!!

The way I understand it it does help the lead flow smoother.  I smoke all of my molds.  I get alot less miss pours with this done.  I highly reccomend doing it.
