scents
« on: March 08, 2009, 10:54:53 AM »
Does anybody know if Vaseline is flammable or safe to work with if i use it to an added base scent?

Planning on slowly trying to get it to a liquid base, add some scent and returning back to it's gel form.

Question is this safe? Or should i be warned not to do it?

I would think if its safe to put on your chapped lips it would be safe to put on a bait  ;D

Me too... ;D

 :shrug

I'm just worried if i try to slowly heat it to a liquid form i may blow or burn myself up...lol

Wondering if anybody attempted this?

Maybe Crossbow can help.  I bet somewhere over the time he has tried Vaseline.

You could also try some good 'ol lard.  I would think it would work fine.

i have been using it for a couple years. melt down in the micro wave then add your scent. make sure you have a rag with you when putting it on baits, makes you hands slick. it holds on good. i buy anise oil and grarlic oil and add it to the vasoline. you can also buy worm oil from lure craft and add the oil to it and put in a spray bottle. some one told me beeswax also but have not tryed it.

I think the question is whether it's going to catch fire if you heat it up to a liquid,..the answer is yes & no!!

If you heat it up hot enough it will reach it's "flash point" and ignite!  Note that this is different than it's combustion temp (the temp at which it will burn if you light it on fire...)!

The flash point of vaseline is around 200C/400F,...so as long as you stay well below that temp you'll be fine!

 :2thumbs  Thanks! More needed information.

I'm going to stick with keeping it to a slow burn/melt and take it safe.

I have been using petroleum jelly for years as a scent holder.  I have never tried to melt it and use oils.  I just take it and mix in garlic powder.  I have a little tool I made from a nail to smear it on FnF jigs.  I dip the head of my tube inserst in it.  It makes them slickery and smelly so they go inside the tubes easier.

This stuff turned out awesome.....I'm almost tempted to lick the stuff. :o

It smells exactly like crayfish(if you ever been to a crayfish cook out you'll know the smell).I had a hard time washing out the stirrer i used to mix it
with....so there is no way this stuff is gonna wash off after only a few cast.

My girl complained about me smelling like crayfish the whole day. ::2

you can buy scent from lurecraft and other lure building sites. i buy pure anise that is super concentrated from the net. not the anise star but pure anise and it is strong and the fish tear it up better than any scent i use. this is where i buy my anise. its a little pricey but it only takes a few drops when i cook the plastic then i add a few drops in the bag. i got guys all over the country and tourney fisherman that just love this stuff.
