Is it cheaper to pour your own? They do look like a professional job. Do you have any intentions of trying to make tubes? Swizzle

It is a little cheaper in the long run but the initial set-up is costly. I do it more as a hobby than to save money. I also like the softness of hand poured plastic better than the mass produced stuff and I can control the colors.

As far as tubes go they are actually the cheapest to pour because you don't need a mold. I've done a few by just dipping the threaded end of a bolt into the hot plastic. Dip once about 4 inches, let it set, and repeat twice but only dip 2 inches so the head is thicker than the tentacles. Then just unscrew the plastic off the bolt and cut with a razor knife.

the tube is one I need to master.  I'd like to make some 6-8" tubes in green pumpkin.

GMAN,
I heat my plastic on a hot plate using a pot designed to melt candle wax.

http://www.candlechem.com/equipment.htm#Melting

I use the mini for pouring but for tubes use the larger size. I buy them from that company but use their eBay store. They usually have lots of 4 pots for cheap.

Use a bolt and mark the depth you're looking for using a couple of nuts screwed against each other to hold them in place. You can also attach 4 bolts to a piece of wood so you could do 4 tubes at a time. Dip once all the way to the nut. Keep it in the same vertical position and let it drip until it sets, them dip again about half way. Let it set again and repeat for a third time if you want extra thick heads. To get the finished tube off just unscrew it. The screw threads leave a texture inside that gives the tenticles some extra action. You can buy a tube cutter from lurecraft but I like to just cut them with a razor knife.

Using the microwave to heat the plastic would take a little longer because you'd have to keep re-heating between dips. With a hot plate you can just keep it hot the whole time.

I get my plastic from http://www.del-mart.com/shop/home.php. He sells a plastic softener that can be added to the plastic, in small quantities, to adjust the softness of a finished bait.
