10 too many or 1 too few
« on: August 14, 2009, 04:19:06 PM »
I've been making some swim jigs for a brush pile fishing trip on Tuesday and that got me to wondering about others.

I know BigT only buys one or two baits at a time unless he has to buy an 8 or 10 pack of grubs.

Which of these best describes you in terms of baits for a fishing trip.

I tend to buy one to start with...sometimes two. Then, If it produces well, I buy a few more and if it finishes out a proven bait, I stock pile them ;D If it's one that;s becoming hard to find, I buy all I can find until I can't.

For instance, I bumped into a worm two years ago that wound up being a really decent worm. That color pattern was obviously a special run or something so I went and found where I had bought the first two packs and bought more of them. Once I used most of those I went to every store locally in this county to make sure they didn't have any, and then I went and bought every pack the store had.(lol.) I have cornered the local market on that color,  ;D (actually, I only have four or five packs left, there were only a few left out there)

when trying out new lures i find the following to be true a lot of the time:

if i buy one or two, they are almost guaranteed to catch fish...and a bunch of 'em. but, when i go to the store to re-up on them, they are GONE!!!  :o

however, if i buy a ton of a particular bait, they won't catch a thing!!

The sad truth is I have given away many more baits than I currently own. Most of them were singles.
I can’t tell you how many baits I either own or have owned that were one hit wonders. You know what baits I’m talking about; that one particular day, on that one particular lake when the moon and stars were in perfect alignment and we just tore them up; you go out and load up on them but they never catch another fish!

Hard baits that are sold individually I always buy a set. The reason is simple, if it is producing well and I lose one I have a backup. Baits that come with more than one in a pack I might only buy one bag. Then, like some you all I will buy as many as I can afford if it is really working for me. :monk2 bring it on.

I tend to buy pairs of baits if it's not something that i use all the time.  If it's a go-to bait though,..I start to fret if i don't have 5-10 of them! :)

Well I'm definitely in the 10 too many group.  I just finished making 3 dozen 3/4 and 1 oz jigs for a Tuesday morning brush pile trip.  I don't think I can lose that many in one morning but I sure would hate to run out and have to switch to lighter jigs. ;D
