Abu Berkley combo?
« on: March 14, 2010, 12:34:44 PM »
So I found a Abu garcia smax and berkley lighting rod combo for a sick deal with a rebate and was curious on opinions.  I really got into fishing last year and never owned a baitcaster so I'm going to try it out this year.  If you could please give some input on this combo and let me know some of the tricks and tips I would appreciate it.

before your first cast read the booklet that comes with the reel.  ;D  It should tell you how to set it to where it will backlash the least. hehe, This tip is not to say you are a beginner at all, but it may keep you from replacing the line twice in less than 30 mins.  ;D

If that combo is within your budget and will suit your need, then that is the one for you!  I have ABU reels but not that model.

I've tried out my buddies shimano and I noticed that they do get backlash like crazy I've seen him get so upset he about gave up on them.  He told me once he got the hang of them it's one of his favorites now.  I have 2 custom spinning reels that I used all last season in which I changed all the bearings and grease so I'm not unfamiliar with tuning but I'm looking for a new challange.

That's the-very-way I started out ... Backlashing every cast  ;D . Frustrating to say the least and is where my tip was derived, hehe. I started out with a Diawa way back then and it took me quite-a-while to master the blasted thing. But, once I did, it's hard foe me to fish anything else(baitcasters).

When it comes to fishing utensils, let no one tell you what you MUST buy. The're tools out there for everybody and if thats what you need to start out with, then you have made the correct choice! And If at some point you feel like you need to upgrade, then upgrade.

Hope you enjoy your new rig Moc!

Oh, and I have used Berkley and or Lightnin Rods off and on most all my life.

That tip saved my hind end more than a few dozen times every year. That flat out works!

Only once did it not work....and that was when i hooked a tree branch behind me before the forward cast and didn't know.....Worst backlash i ever saw....It was pretty funny too...LOL...shoulda seen my face.Lucky i had another fishing rig with me.....Always bring more than one rod...preferably something as a back up in in case you have one of those "d'oh" moments....and you will sooner or later.
Magic lures don't exist.
