any dd22 throwers
« on: July 24, 2008, 11:40:18 AM »
on here?  This is one of my favorite deep diving baits.  The thing flat out catches fish.  Good fish too.  Its not a lure that will typically load the boat with fish but the ones you do catch are typically good fish.

My favorite spots on fishing a dd22 are main lake rocky points.

I have never even owned one.  But I really need to get one and try trolling it down the river.

I am not a big crankbait fisherman at all.

I have a few, but I really don't throw them very often anymore. And I agree, yes, they do catch fish.

What size/type line do you use with yours, GMan?

I typically use 10-12lb flourocarbon on a 7' mh rod.  Either cabelas novis or triple fish brand flouro.

I'm getting ready to buy a rod that is 7'6" long just for these dd22's and some big M custom deep divers along with traps.

Grimlin here are some dd22's  they aint small. ;D

I have a couple of Red Eye something-or-others that go run somewhere around 2’ down to 18’. Never caught a fish on one. Course I don’t throw them much as I never really learned how to use them.

Go out to a main lake pt this time of year that has alot of bigger rock not pee gravel.  Chunk the thing out there and slowly reel it back.  You should hold a speed of the lure to were you feel the lure going THump Thump THump across the rocks/bottom.

I've never caught a fish on one of these things in open water.  I've always been bumpin the bottom.

There's a local guy here that's one of the top tourney guys in CT and he swears by them!!  Like you said G,..he claims it's not a numbers bait, but most of the time he catches some very nice sized fish on them and it's a bait that almost no one else uses!
I keep thinking I ought to pick some up,...but then I would have to find something else to do with all this swimbait stuff I own!! :o :o >:D

It is the best deep-brushpile crankbait I have ever used.  Colors:  Mountain Dew, Sour Grape.

I have a few, but for those that know me well, you know they stay dry :-[

I do need to try them a little more often though.

What about the suspending model of the DD's, do yall like those any better than the non-suspending ones? Also, have yall tried one of the new colors called sx shad(sexy shad?)

Most all of my older DD's, DLN's, LN's are all brighter colors instead of the natural color patterns, ....except for the two I just bought ;D.

Just came across an article in the latest issue of Basswest magazine about a guy and his dad out in CA that win a lot of tourneys throwing crankbaits and mainly the DD22's.   The son was being interviewed and he said that he throws them on an 8 foot rod with 10 or 12# fluorocarbon.  He also said that the only modification that he does is to put on better quality hooks in the same size.  Also, he carries a few colors but his go-to one is the red-black craw! 8)

Interesting :)

I have a hard time using light line, even though I have switched the hooks out to razor sharp gammies I am afraid to use 10 lb test with them :o

Well after all the hubub,..I went out and bought a few colors.   I've been throwing 10-20 casts with them a few times out and yestarday I finally got my first fish! :)
It was only about 1.5# or so,...but it did give me confidence to probably continue tossing them every now and then! ;)

BTW, it was in a lake that is weeds and muck on the bottom,..so instead of trying to hit the bottom,...I was outside a weedline, slightly deeper than it would run,.. and I threw in a few little pauses and/or twitches on the retrieve (to simulate bumping something).  The fish came off one of those pauses and the color I was using was that new "sexy shad"! 8)

:o I'm shocked that we just happened to buy the same color this far away. I hear the purple back one is even better then the Sx Shad. Good luck with'um J4!

Almost every crankbait article I have ever read say’s that you should hit something. On my occasional uses of crankbaits I have either raked up the bottom muck or lost them. The only fish I have ever caught with a crankbait, outside of Rattle Traps, have been outside of weedlines. This spring I bought some of the “sexy shad” colors but have yet to catch a fish with one.

I hardly ever throw crankbaits anymore.  If I throw anything it will be a mid size 1- minus, or a lipless bait.

RHF throws one of those 20 ft.+ bomber and has been known to tear 'em up on that thing!!! we pre-fished demopolis 2 weeks in a row; first week he caught about a 2.5 and a 5 and the next week he caught a 5.5!!! plus a bunch of other average & small size fish on the deep crank. also: he seems to use the gawdiest/ugliest colors he can find....and they work great.
