Checking water temps.
« on: January 23, 2009, 10:25:39 PM »
What do you guys use to check water temps? I realize most have boats and equipment for that, but when shore fishing how do you guys do it.

I'd like to find something i can tell how cold the water is. Trying to base reading off as where the fish are during certain times of the year.

I know there's small hand held stuff for around $99.I've always heard bad things about them.Batteries don't last, doesn't work right after 2-3 times use, ect, ect.I'm looking for something cheap i can just throw in the water, reel back in and see what the water temp is reading.

The only thing I know that would you would be able to cast would be the hummingbird smart cast things, but that is basically strict surface water temp, but also a depth finder. and like you said probaby in the $100 range

I remember seeing a thermometer that had a 20-25 ft cable with the temp sensor on one end that you could probably tie a weight to, but would have to chuck it out by hand, that would probably be your only and best best, and it has a little lcd temp screen on the other end. I have seen them at walmart before. You may be able to find it in cabelas or bass pro too.

Grimlin:

I went on e-bay and found a small temp. gauge with a 6ft probe.

  Cost was about $10.00

Check e-bay for temp gauge with probe and see what you come up with.

Seriously, a rectal thermometer would work.  Attach it to the line cast it out and let it down to how ever far you want to check.

You can get an aquarium thermometer at Wal-Mart and tie it on a string to toss in the water to retrieve.

Right now this is what i'm thinking of doing...getting one of those and set it up as a drop shot rig with the thermometer 6'' from weight. Then tie a bobber on that to get sublevel temps as well.I should be able to cast this thing then.
