Crankbaits

Wow starting to post to many times, have to watch that.

I am in the process of reworking some cranbaits.
I think I know the answer but I am not sure.

 Question:

I have some small crankbaits that have gotten a lot of bites and caught losts of fish, and have lost lots of fish, these crankbaits have 2- # 8 treble hooks which I think is the problem, so if I wanted to replace the 2- # 8's with 1-#4 would you put the single # 4 on the front or back of the crankbait.

I know bass strike the head but I like them on the back what is your opinion which I value very much.

George

P/S  I have upgrade all my crankbait treble hooks so easy with Carter help and everyone else.

i would go with the closest size i could find to what came on the bait originally. try mustad triple grips; those have been really great hooks for me. and for goodness sakes, be carful changin those things out! i prick my fingers at least once every time i change out trebles  :tick

Im not a fan of one trebel cranks Goerge but If thats the way your going I would put it on the front. Mustad are good stock hooks but I like owner or gammys better. You can put one size bigger on the front and the same size on the back or a size smaller that might help with hookups. It also keeps the hooks from getting together. You take a hook away or put some to big on it will hamper the action of your bait, even removeing one could do that.

Thats why they call it fishin and not catchin!

George, glad to hear I was of some help. As for the trebles, I usually switch mine out for Ecalibur brand. They are so dang sharp right out of the package they will stick you from a foot away :D I know some of you said you like the Mustad but they always seem kind of dull to me. Whichever you go with George remember that when you make a change it will affect the action of the bait.

I would just try using both hooks still  but upgrading the size of one of them, maybe keep the 8 on the front and go to a 6 or 4 on the back.

I think I would keep them the same size but try EWG hooks of whatever manufacturer you like.

Its just the nature of crankbaits, your going to loose some no matter what hooks you use.

These are the ones I use...    http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/gamakatsu-treble-hooks/830203.aspx

In the areas where I am not fishing heavy cover I somtimes use a long billed crank that I droped the hook down on by using a wire from a spinner bait, sometimes this works good, gets better in mouth hookups.  This is not foolproof but it works in the right situation.
BIG OR SMALL, THEY ARE ALL FUN, TAKE A KID FISHEN !!
