Do rod actions mellow with useage?
« on: November 12, 2005, 12:04:03 PM »
Hi,

If someone uses a rod a lot will the graphite limber up a bit?
I tried some rods that I haven't used in a while and they felt different.
Some rods that I thought had an extra fast action seem more like fast/moderate now.
Should I start to 'exercise' some rods on a tree to soften them up? :-\

D.

I don't have a scientific answer for this, But I believe they do, I just got a Heavy action rod and when I got it it was real stiff and after a few fish, snags and alot of casting, it seems to  have softened up a little bit which I am liking.

I don't think they do it probably has to do with you not using them for a while. I picked a rod/rrel today thay I haven't used in a while and it took me a few casts to reaqauint myself. I know it is not the rod b/ 1. It is a loomis and 2. it is less than a year old, but it felt funny in my hands for a few minutes.

Speaking from a purely composites point of view,...I'd be surprised if they don't get softer with time.  Every time you bend the rod on a snag or fighting a fish,...and to a lesser extent, even when casting,..you're doing a tiny bit of damage to the graphite composite.  This will build up over time, to the point where the rod will have lower flex modulus (stiffness) and you will notice it as "softer action".  How fast this happens is gonna depend on the rod and the user.

BTW, I'd expect this to actually happen more with a high-end rod,..because they are lighter (ie less material) than the cheaper ones.
If you're a fisherman, ya gotta fish!
