Warm water, mild soap and a surgical scrub ( very soft bristles ) to remove the dirt from the cork. A rag and car wax to clean and wax the blank.

Does the waxing make that much of a difference.  I'm asking because I'm starting to spend more money on rods and I want them to last.  Is it really necessary to wax them?
HOPE ALL'S WELL IN YOUR LIVEWELL!

Well I forgot to reply,  I cleaned all my rods with a damp cloth and used a silicone cloth that I had.  Wow after cleaning and wiping them down the look great. Couple of my jig rods had the guides completly covered with dry moss.  Hopefully the silicone will offer some protection.

I've started that too.  Fixed my Team Diawa X  the roller bearing was completely mossed up thats why it would drag.  One of my chronarchs had so much moss on the line guide it was green in color before cleaning. Nasty needed cleaned bad.  Completely disassembled my sustain and gave it a good cleaning too.  Just 5-6 more reels to go.

I don't fish in the winter when it's cold, so I have alot of time to clean every thing. Clean my rods with warm soapy water. Take my reels apart, clean them with hot soapy water and a soft tooth brush, dry them and use Quantum hot sauce oil and grease and I'm ready to go fishing come spring.
