Fishing Tubes - Need Help
« on: July 15, 2011, 04:52:48 PM »
I posted a nice fish in the "Birthday Bass" thread and I will admit I got kind of lucky there. I fished tubes many moons ago and for some reason I went away from them. I am fishing a 4" tube and don't ask the name of them, I'm still trying to find out what this guy sent me as an extra on a "1 Lure" gentleman's bet we had for an NHL playoff series.

I've been fishing them t-rigged with a 3/16th oz bullet sinker. My problem is, at the time I could only get a 3/0 worm style hook and I was thinking more like a 4/0 hook. I've been using them tex-posed as well as just putting the hook inside the tube and praying that I can get a good enough hookset using it that way. What should I use if I'm t-rigging, offset 4/0? I'm guessing here.

Thanks guys.

I have tried a lot of different sizes and styles of hooks on tubes fishing them Trig, Texposed, and Texskin with the weight outside and inside the tube.  I have never liked the hook ratio with any of it so I have moved to the external hook like in the pic.

I also fish rocks and need a weedguard so I have started using 90# coated SS leader as a weedguard.  It works for me.

Some guys who don't have weedguards rig them weedless like this pic.

I use a 2/0 or bigger (depends on size of tube) EWG Gamakatsu hook and T-rig it. Hardly any problems with my set-up.

I really haven't found a better hook than the skip gap hook from Gamakatsu.

I've pulled away from the inside exposed hook jig heads for the simple fact it hard not snagged being exposed. There are certain spots I have that they will work extremely well at,I don't get hung up too often, but I still get hung up.Jigman posted something that would work and would be a lot more snagless than what I use. My only problem is That weed guard is a big distraction to me.I don't get as many bites.I don't know if it's the weed guard spooking the fish or it's just me. The jig head with hooks expose...I can go through a pack of hooks in less than a half a day's fishing. It got too expensive to do that...LOL

The best Hooks I found are these. http://www.mizmo.com/riggininsider.html. They must be used with 3 1/2" tubes or bigger. They won't work for anything smaller than that.I like to use 2 3/4" sometimes specially when the bite is tough. Those hooks with that type of weight is not easy to find. Not too many people make them.
Magic lures don't exist.

I use a setup like that when I tube fish except the weight is separate from the hook and goes inside the tube. The end result is with the hook rigged just like Grimlin showed. It works good for me.
Bass don't eat what they don't see.

for that size tube I typically throw a 3/0-4/0 widegap premium hook.  Mostly Gamakatsu or Owner.
