Help with a problem
« on: January 04, 2009, 12:43:50 PM »
I do not even know if I can explain my problem but here goes.

Spilt rings I am change out and upgradeing my treble hooks on my carank bait.

I have split ring pliers but when I open the split ring and start moveing the hook to come off, some time the hook comes off and the crankbait also.

I have remove some hooks and am just trying to put the upgrade hook on and some time it goes on and some time the hook is on but the crankbait came off.

Even with pliers fingers are getting sore.
I am changing out about 50 or 60 crankbaits.

Is there a system to doing this job are is it hit and miss when you change treble hooks on a crankbait,

I am about half way done.

George, it sounds as if while you are moving the hook around on the split ring you are also moving the split ring at the same time. And that is why it comes off of the crankbait. Here is something you can try: after you get the new hook started on the split ring put the split ring pliers down, pick up a pair of needlenose pliers and use it to turn the split ring while holding the hook in your fingers. If there was any way I could demonstrate it for you I would. Good luck with the rest of them. :)

It took me some time to get it right too.You almost need practice to figure out it's trick.

Time like this i wish i had a recorder and put up on You tube for ya.Once figured out it's easy.So i'm going to try to explain how i do it...

Get your split ring pliers and grab yourself a split ring. Now the point(tooth) end should be INSIDE the ring or into the O.Line you that tooth between the  rings and press down.It should open up.Don't get fusterated if it doesn't work the very first time. With practice you'll get a rhythm down. Now to get the crankbait and turn your pliers sideways. You should leave about a 1/4 open to slip your ring onto the crankbait.Put your finger onto the ring and remove plier. The ring should be sideways and should be turned onto the crankbait like you would put a key on your key ring.I can do it in 3 turns and it slides right into place.

That's how i do it.

The split ring pliers sound like the ticket to me  ;) .  The very few split rings that I've messed with I used a pair of needle nose pliers and a very small flat-tipped screwdriver.   :o

hey crankbait, I found this as an example(see link for video). However, you might not have those kind of pliers. I have two pair of the cheap flat kind and they'll make you pull ya hair out!

http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=split%20ring%20pliers&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi

The first image on the google images page is a video of a pair of split ring pliers. Click on the image. Once it comes up, Scroll down the page to the bottom and click the actual video.

I know it's not showing them putting anything on a crankbait but it might help somehow.
