Hook Size
« on: November 16, 2005, 11:57:18 AM »
Alright 5" Soft stix question. Squirelly/senko/tiki/etc.

I've always used either a 4/0 or 5/0. But saw on another forum most of the people used a 3/0 For this size.
I did notice a little more action on the bait when using the 4/0 versus the 5/0 and could only assume I would get even more action with a 3/0, but going down that far raises concerns on a good hookset. What are your thoughts on this?

Just from experience or lack of,  I like 2/0 Gamakatsu hooks with senko style baits, I tried 3/0 to 5/0 and got alot of gut shots and deeper hook sets
plus they sink a little different and faster on lareger hooks, so after I switched over I've only had 1 g/s and I seem to hook everything i feel touch the
lure and they stay hooked..IMO
My crew also use the 2/0 and one guy the 3/0....

I've used 2/0 to 5/0 EWG Gamakatsu's with no problems......But the hook that I really prefer for them,  these days is a 3/0 "Texposer" hook from Lunker City.  I don't really know why,..but I just get a much more solid hookup with them (most always sticks in the upper lip or roof of their mouth..)

Back when I first started using Senko style baits (5"), I thought 2/0-5/0  hooks looked too "big" so I opted for 1/0 EWG gammies!

I know, but they worked just fine. Since then, I have settled on 3-4/0 EWG gammies and I wouldn't hesitate to go up to 5/0 either.

BTW, the hook ups with the 1/0 have always been in the corner of the mouth where it should be. Weird, huh? ;D

I never use any other hook than a Sugoi 4/0 for 5" Senkos unless I'm wacky-riggin' and then I use a 3/0 Gammy Weedguard hook.
