Lipless cranks
« on: February 05, 2009, 10:13:38 AM »
What are you guys favorites?  What rod, line, etc do you throw them on?

Right now my favorite is a 1/2oz silverado rattle trap.  I throw them on 10lb flouro with a 7' PR844 Loomis.  Basically a 7' med heavy crankbait rod.

I'm looking to throw more trap type baits and wondering who all has good ones?

i love small lipless cranks. i got this little lv-1 by l.c. for $6 off ebay and it is a fish catching little rascal. i fish it on a 7' glass rod that i made, with a cv-z253 millionaire that has 'ceramic lightning' spool bearings. i also like those little daiwa traps with a feather hook put on the back. great in october!

I got some really great looking H20 Express ones that I really like the looks of but unfortunately I really haven't gotten to try them out. I will let you know after next week though.

I like the Diawa Game Vibes a lot too.

Which ever rod and reel that I have laying on my deck that I have another bait on that I decide I am not going to use any more usually ;D

Just about all of my rods are 6'-6" Med Hvy so it never really seems to matter much for me.

I like the 1/4 and 1/2 ounce Rat-l-traps, and the 1/2 ounce Cordell Super Spots.
I use an Abu 5600C4 spooled with 15 pound mono.  The rod is a 6'-6" Bionic from BPS.
I like this set up because I can throw both size baits without having to keep switching around.

I learned my lesson a few years back when KVD was on TV and describing what a great technique it was to fish some strike king floating worms on a jighead.  At the time, I thought to myself,.."awww he's just saying that because strike king is a big sponsor for him,..."
Well, it didn't even have a name at the time,..but then a good 2 years later,... all of a sudden the hottest thing in bassfishing was this technique called "shaky-worming",....and I again thought to myself,.."J4F you are an idiot,..you coulda been doing this 2 years before most other people if you'd have listened to him!!!!!! ::) ::))

So about a year ago when I heard KVD say that "strike king's red-eye shad was better than the others because it is the only one that flutters on the fall",...well I listened to him and that's what I use now!  8)  And I also listened to him when he said that if you use the triplegrip short-shank hooks on them,..that the front and rear hooks do not tangle..... ;)

Now, I've never used them side-by-side with any of my rattletraps (that are collecting dust now),...so I cannot swear to whether the red-eyes have been better,...but I am pretty pleased with them and certainly do not have any complaints !!

As for equipment,..I either throw them with 12# fluoro or sometimes braid depending on how thick the cover is,..and I use a standard 7' MH rod. 8)

Jack, that's a good looking lipless! I've got a bunch of lipless crankbaits but I never use them. When and where are good times for throwing them?

crab, Around here anglers use lipless baits a good bit. They are versatile and can be worked from top to bottom. The most common retrieve is the "chunk and wind retrieve" and it works well when the fish are up in the column. Flats, grass flats, the edge of weeds in sloughs and pockets, etc., and creekmouths and small pocket openings are fairly common areas here. You can slow them down a bit and run it a little deeper to cover submerged structure and such. Some anglers will even "yo-yo" them on bottom. Use your imagination as to what you could do with it on or near the bottom.

When? Most anglers here pretty much have one tied on year round. 1/2oz. is the most common size used here.
