My new Jigs
« on: February 14, 2009, 05:17:21 PM »

These are the jigs that Gman made for me. Their Black/Blue/Chartruse. My "muddy water" jigs.

Nice!   Since I anm going to try jig fishing for the very first time this coming season, in the same kinda water Scott does, I do believe I'll go with that color also  :) . What weights would be good?  1/4oz max maybe?  The water depths around here that I fish go anywhere from 1' to 23' .  I normally use 8# Yo-Zuri-Hybrid line on spinning reels, mounted on 6'6" and 7' rods.

That is getting really close to the work of a 3/8 oz jig.  I'd want some of both in 2 or 3 colors if it were me.  Maybe some similar to these.

Thanks.   Those look to be the wide gap hooks.

Actually only the purple is a wg.  It is prolly the same hook as GMAN put in pondys jigs.  Those are some skirt patterns I have been fooling around with for next spring when I go back to crawjigs.

All of those look really good fellers.

JMO WW I wouldn't go over 1/4 oz with that setup.

Why just the 1/4oz?  Because of the shallow waters I fish?  Occasionally get into water that is 23' deep.  I pm'd GMAN yesterday asking for 1/4 and 3/8oz.    :)

It may be just me, but I have a hard time fishing with jigs any heavier on that light of line and feeling the subtle bites.

It may be completely different for you though.

For me that's a finesse fishing setup, again that's just me, and probably not indicative of everyone else.

I guess too it would depend on the total weight of the whole jig.

Gman whats the total weight of one of your 1/4oz jigs with the hooks skirt and all?

Jack I don't see any reason why he can't get along just fine.  I used only 10# mono on lower Table Rock for several years because of the water clarity.  We fished 1/4-3/4 all the time depending on the depth.

Besides if he loses all his 3/8 oz GMAN has more. >:D

Never thought about that.

So the 8# Yo-Zuri Hybrid I use should do okay    :scratch

You already know how to fish that line and how to have your drag set.  I don't forsee any problem.  If it feels too heavy, try a smaller trailer.  I throw quite a bit of 3/8 oz jigs on 6# line fishing on upper Bull Shoals when there is current.

I had G make me black with chartruese, after seeing  a show with a pro say when everyone is throwing black and blue in murky water, throw black/chartruese, it accounted for my 16.12 lb bag :o

Dang, and I thought I had had a original idea!
I am chomping at the bit to give these a try. I know that there is more cover in WW home lake than we know about and I think these jigs will help us find it and the fish.

Joe, I saw a Verses yesterday where KVD said that very thing. He also said he always uses rattles, but I have never noticed much difference using them.

We used to use a little chartreuse with black but I never noticed any difference over just plain black around here.  For several years some orange in the brown was hard to beat but the fish seem to be off it now.

I have to admit that over the years I have tried a ton of different colors and black/blue seems to always be the most productive. At times red shad will work but that seems to be in a very narrow set of conditions. We have “pellet traps” where I work and we have collected some huge crawdads out of them. Most are a dark green with some brown thrown in. Being about 5 miles from one of our favorite holes I thought that throwing the same color jig and/or plastic might prove to be productive. Not one bite!

A side note; after trying Joe’s suggestion about throwing your jig out on the pavement and seeing how much action your putting into it I came to the conclusion that I am “overworking” my baits.

If that's the same show I saw,..it was Tommy Biffle who said that he liked the black/chartreuse when there were a lot of folks fishing standard colors!  Note though, that he showed one,..and it was a very yellow & black jig,.....definitely not black with just a few strands of yellow!

Note:  Gary Klein has been saying for years that he likes to use a piece of chartreuse worm, threaded onto his jigs ahead of the trailer to give it a different look also!  (Although I have yet to catch a single bass fishing such a rig!! ???)

I also don't go heavier than 1/4 ounce on spinning gear,...but that's because I'm using heavy-wire hooks on my larger jigs and I doubt that I'd be able to get a decent hook-set with a spinning rod!  I guess you might be able to get by with 3/8 if it's a light-wire hook,...but why wouldn't you just use a baitcaster for it at that point??
If you're a fisherman, ya gotta fish!
