Need some opinions
« on: June 23, 2009, 10:22:55 AM »
I've got my own fishing style and thats all good and stuff.  Here is my issue I am needing some outside opinions on.  I'm taking the boss fishing to the honey hole and all she can throw is a spinning rod.  Lots of structure and lots of big hard hitting fish.  The rod she will be using is a med action spinning rod BSR852 and a sustain 2500.  Water is muddy and I'm thinking about 10lb line maybe 12lb.

What I do not want is her to lose a monster fish and ruin her day.  This trip is going to be all about her and getting her to catch some lunkers.  I'm wanting to build her excitement for fishing so she will want to do it more.

Throw some simple lures out there too.  Soft plastics is what I'm thinking.  That will be her best bet I think.

Give her some topwater plugs.  Her delay in setting a hook will be the ticket for that, oh and make sure her drag is set properly.

good call.  She would like that too.  A chug bug would be perfect.  See a big 5+lber hit that and she would love it.  Easy to work and works great.

Tubes are what hooked Red.  Now she uses spinnerbaits and buzzbaits but still won't look at a baitcaster.

You had better be careful.  Red now owns 7 setups for various applications. ;D

Whatever she throws it WILL BE drug behind the boat, every women does it so plastics will be the way to go when the top water bite subsides. She will probably wax you good! They have their own ways of doing things ya know! ;D

Have a blast, g!

G, the biggest problem I have seen with teaching someone to fish is how to set the hook. Most novices just feel the weight of the fish and start reeling. They are used to fishing with live bait, minnows or worms, and the fish more or less impale themselves.
When teaching my Grandson I used green pumpkin Baby Brushogs dipped in yellow Spike-it garlic die (muddy water). I used a very light weight and made sure to skin hook the baits. It took a bit but he finally learned to reel down and try to “cross their eyes!”.
I have now gone from being the teacher to being schooled. I’m willing to bet you end up with the same problem.  ;D

Gman, I have been fishing with 8# test primarily on my spinning reels. Less of a problem with it and I have caught some big fish on it. Notice I said "fish" and not bass.  ::) ;D The biggest this year was a 25 inch drum. As long as you have sharp hooks and the proper drag set she should not have a problem. If you want to increase her bite ration put a Berkley Gulp bait on her hook. Everything bites it and that will keep her interested. I took my girlfriend and her daughter out last week for a few hours of fishing. They did not catch anything (not for a lack of trying) but they had fun. Her daughter even told me on the phone later  that she had a great time. I promised to take them again and we will work at getting them a fish. Let her try a spinnerbait too, if the fish are active. As a side note, my girlfriend told me that it did not matter to her if she caught anything. She just wanted to be with me. Maybe that is what your better half wants too, just to be with you. You all have fun  ;)
