Pinheads or Patriots? You Decide.
« on: December 12, 2010, 11:28:16 AM »
Pinheads or Patriots? You Decide.

I haven't been able to go fishing since Veteran's Day so I did the next best thing. I assembled some inline spinners, two of which have a feather pattern that I have dubbed the patriot.

From left to right:
#1 - Inline spinner with a pearl color bead that reflects back colors other than pink. Ready for field testing, and looking forward to do so with great anticipation. It will also get a chance to be tested in another part of the U.S.A.
#2 and #3 - “Black Beauty Patriots with flashabou. Would love to test these two just outside weed edges or drift in current. These will also get a chance to be tested elsewhere.
#4 Inline spinner with a green bead and an X-Rap tail.

So in the words of Bill O'Reilly, “What say you? Are they pinheads or patriots? Would you keep a couple in your emergency box or dismiss inline spinners as a lure you wouldn’t consider using as a self-respecting bass angler?”

You decide and let us know.  Pithy comments welcome.

IB, Those look really good!  And, I would think Patriot over pinhead any day! I don't know if you've ever read the history of the Mepp's company (http://www.mepps.com/about-us/mepps-history.php) but those type lures overall are a mainstay in many tackle boxes even today. My father, here in the deep south, avidly used the Aglia spinner(and some others) for bass most of the year. He ordered or bought his plain back then and would tie his own tails the way he wanted them. If he were still able, an in-line spinner would be the first lure out of the box! I have witnessed many days where they would not touch anything but an in-line spinner fishing with my dad. They are a proven lure and yes, I have a few myself.

Those are great. I like the one on the far right.  I use those in my pond on a regular basis. They are time tested baits. Good job.

Bass don't eat what they don't see.

Those do look like they would serve you well. I use to throw Mepps spinners all the time. Caught a ton of bass and crappie with them. As I remember the feathered ones always did better.

I think you were the one who got me started on making my own IB.  :bow

I like em's plain.  Feather are nice, but i've done well on just plain old silver or gold ones as well.

I don't know if this is just me or something i just discovered. I brought some owner treble hooks last year on sale that were suppose to be used for crankbaits.Well these hooks are super light and i notice the action feels a little different from the ones that have the triple grip mustad hooks. The ones with the triple grip(mustad) hooks spins and casts much better than the light owner hook ones do. Does hook weight have any effect on an inline spinner?

Grim,

I have heard that weight (too much) can affect a spinner's performance or action, but it would likely be the weight of the body I would suppose moreso than the weight of the hook. You have a good question that I don't know the answer too.  :(

A heavier hook (as in its weight) can help in the lure's castibility because it would increase the overall weight of the lure, but I reckon by not too much.

You have an interesting case worth exploring, but I imagine you and I would have to wait until spring to continue the investigation.  :police:
