plastic baits
« on: March 20, 2006, 10:32:25 PM »
I've got a few questions on plastics.  In this case plastics means pretty much any soft bait including the non-plastic all "natural" baits.  Plastic is just such an easy term to use.  First, does everyone use taste/scent plastics, some, a lot, all the time, or never?

Do you have a favorite brand/formula?

I'm assuming a lot of these need to be kept sealed while being stored, so what's the best method of carrying around a bunch of different ones and keeping them sorted for easy use?

Thanks.

90% of the time I?m throwing something plastic and 90% of what I throw has some scent or salt added to it.
Do I have a favorite scent? Yes, garlic flavored cooking oil. Does it help? Can?t prove it, but I think it does.
The main advantage I get from using this stuff is when I am fishing in weeds the bait slides through these tangles a bit easier.
At the suggestion of others I have tried other scents and not had any luck with them at all. In fact I noticed a decrease in fish catches with some of them. I once did a ?taste test? whereby I threw the exact same lure using ?my scent? and another with the highly recommended scent. I caught more fish with the garlic than the other.
I started using scent?s because I liked the idea of covering up the human scent; but I have seen a situation where a guy took a whiz and then throw right back to where they just went and catch a fish, so I don?t know that this is a valid issue.
I hope this makes ?scents? to you.

I throw plastic quite a bit, and don't add any additional scent to them.  Maybe if I did it would improve my catch ratio.

I pretty much only use my own plastics so yes they are salted and scented, I do have a tube of megastrike on my boat I put a dab on my hard jerkbaits, alot of times the fish will follow them and I think if they get close enough and get a sniff it may make them commit to a snack.

As far as storing them I keep the baits sealed in the bags I put them in, I still have  alot of other plastcis on my boat I have them in worm binders, great way to keep things organized.

Im a big beleiver in scents, and many times have fished against others using the same bait without scent and have caught twice as many as them and thats proof enough for me.  (I have also been in the reverse scenarios by not using scent and getting whooped by my dad who uses it religiously, and he fishes from the back of the boat).

As far as plastics I try to always use the ones that have salt injected and scent if possible.

I use the megastrike and Carolina Lunker Sauce Menhadin shad, and I've also used the Berkely Strike Scent.

My main plastics are GYCB, but I also fish Micro Munch Tackle tubes (El Gordo), Mizmo tubes, Slug-Go and Roboworms.

I am not a firm believer in scents, but I sometimes use MegaStrike because I bought some! Attributes include ease of application, Vaseline like texture and feel.  Regardless of the "scent," I do like the way plastics feel when the MegaStrike has been applied.

I keep most baits in their original package, but I carry a small Plano box for the soft plastics I use on a regular basis. This is probably a month's supply that are in separate compartments, but not their original packages.

I use to carry specific size hooks for a variety of plastics, but now I use mostly 4/0 EWG Gamakatsu hooks. I still sometimes use 5/0 Offset Round Bend when I fish 6" Senkos and inserted jig heads on 3 1/2" smallmouth tubes.

I fish all soft plastics except C-rigs on 7' Medium Power/ Fast Action spinning tackle. I spool up #6 Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft line on this rig.

i use plastics alot. most of them already have scent on them so what i do is i stick the baits that dont have it on them in the  bag with the ones that do have it on them. that usally give it scent. u can also do it with jigs and any other baits u want.

Most of the time I use plastic baits, worms and grubs. But I think plastic worms do a great job of catching fish. Live baits can also be used, effective as well.
