putting new line on reels

How do you all place your spool of line when putting it on your reel without the stations?

baitcasters lay it on side or upright using screwdrivers or etc  ???
spinning reels lay on side or upright  with screwdrivers or etc ???

I know about 80% of you use baitcasters I use both but trying to convert over to baitcasters

I leave it in the box (most have holes for the line to spool out), run the line through my eyes (of my rod), and start cranking.

I just lay it on the floor with the side up that has it coming off counter clock wise and keep tension on it with my fingers before it gets on the reel.

I used to put a pencil through the spool and hold with my toes if no one was around to help. Then I bought a Berkley spooling station and never regretted it. It works great. It also has a battery powered line stripper included.

I used to do the wife hold the pencil thing with a little pressure then as she grew tired of doing this my 6 year old thinks its the most fun thing in the world to do so I'm covered til she goes to college.

I always thought that when spooling a spinning reel, the filler spool should lay flat on the floor.  Crank on a few yards and drop the rod tip.  If the line coils up, turn the spool over.
Just got a new Shimano spinning reel.  The instructions in the box recomend the screwdriver/pencil and letting the filler spool turn.
Which way is correct?

Carter,

Not everyone has toes as long as most F/F's...we are still much closer to the evolutionary chain. :monkey

For conv I use a screwdriver and put one end in a vise (if no one around) tap screwdriver with a hammer till you get the tension you need, works. Surf fishing, use to get out on beach after spooling and send line out on a kite to tighten.....real funny story on that one, a later date......

Spinning, I leave it in the box and use thumb & forefinger for tension, in Carters case, big toe and little toe.

Spinning

Spool the line off the new spool opposite of the way it goes on your reel...

usaually reel on clockwise   filler spool take it off counter clockwise (TENSION important)

Still a twist? Take it out in a boat...and let the line out as your running, NO WEIGHT! you won't need it....slow boat down and retrieve line.. THE MOST FOOLPROOF TO ELIMINATE TWIST.

Okay, here's a tip for those of you that may not know this; after you have respooled your reel and find that the line has lots of twist to it there is a way to get it out. One way is while on a boat. You let out line while moving forward at a slow speed. Let out at least half the spool and let it drag through the water behind you for a couple of minutes, then reel it back in keeping tension on the line. The twist should be gone. You can also let line out in a stream if the water is moving fast enough and then there is the device I made if you want to do it while at home. :)

I think I read this in the same topic on BPS site that I wrote also you can use a  swivel tied to a tree or something solid and walk away from it til you have what you want off then walk back to it slowly winding the line back on and letting the swivel twist put slight pressure on it so it will not have any slack in it.  :shrug I've not tried this yet but going to next time I have a twist in my line I'll probably tie it on the  ATV then drive off while someone holding rod til far enough then wind it in walking toward the ATV.
