Rattle traps
« on: March 16, 2006, 01:49:20 PM »
How many of you guys throw rattle traps or similiar lure.  What type of structure do you typically throw them in.

When I fish one its usually open water for schooling fish, or points with open water and no structure.  I basically use them for a search lure.

I've not fished them much in the past but I would like to rectify that this summer.  When I have used them it's usually been along flats next to channels or standing cover typically when I can see or find on the depth finder schools of bait fish.

I fish Rat-L-Traps, Lucky Craft LV's (and soon the Yo-Zuri Ratl'N Vibe) almost exclusively in deep water over or near structure. The perfect example would be fishing for suspending bass on a point. Other examples would be along a steep bluff or drop-off and old creek channels. I know lots of guys rip them through grass and/ or timber, but I think there are better alternatives for fishing in cover.

Catchin' is more fun than fishin'.

I use to use them alot along time ago, haven't thrown one in a long time, although last weekend a few of the guys caught a lot of shorts on them so I might try one this weekend to see if I can get a keeper or two.

i use them alot on muddy water flats.they are great when reeled right over the top of grass.  i dont use them much in clear water though they just make to much noise.

I've used the Rattl-Trap in water anywhere from 3'-8' and caught a couple of bluegill   ::) .  I've better success on a Bomber floating/shallow diver minnow (w/rattles).  I use it more than the Rattl-Trap.

I love to throw Rattletraps along weed edges, anywhere from 2? to 10? deep. If the fish are active I will throw them any time of the year but spring and fall is when I have the most success with them.
They are also great baits to throw parallel to dropoffs. I generally use a yo-yo style of retrieve and try to keep the bait just off of the bottom.

I sorta do the yo-yo thing with the floating minnow.  Crank and dive it, continue retrieving, stop, let it float to/near the surface, crank and dive it again.  That thing casts like a mile it seems on a calm day.

Is it just me, but do chrome or red Rat L Traps work anywhere but in NY?
All the other colors I have just don't do as well for lake or river fishing.

Rip rap and let it sink a little and pull it again. I also rip it through the tips of coontail and hydrilla in the summer when weeds are thick they usually hit when you rip it loose from the weeds.

I fish them off deep points, and have never caught a bass on them yet.

I have only 4 sizes in my tackle arsenal, do not have much faith in them.

They are about the only crankbait I use.  For structure I will let them settle down to the bottom and then start cranking.  When I use them in grass or weeds, I usually run them just over the top of the weeds.

Scott,
It's a WWII PT boat I found on the internet.  Can't tell if the hull# is 73 or not.  You were a SeaBee?  Cool!  I'll find you a SeaBee logo if you want and post the link to it.

The only rattle traps that have caught bass for me are the rapala rattlin' raps. None of the other I've tried like the Lewis, Kinami haven't worked to date, but I still keep. There might be a time the bass might no longer want to respond to the rattlin' rap.

Anyway, I like to fish them over grass beds and along the bottom with the nose pointed down banging along the bottom. 2nd biggest bass to date was caught with that method.

CB,

I'm on the West Coast so for me it's actually 2:52 am. Wait. That's still late! I drank too much coffee, the wife and kids are out of town and I was taking a break from painting the stairwell. Master Bedroom is next tomorrow.

BTW, Thanks for the lures! I received them Friday.

Rattle traps work great for me in Florida. I use Diamond Shad by Stike King, they work great almost any color. The only thing is the they have very bad hookups so I changed the front hook to a size smaller and add an extra ring works great can't put it down.!!! ;D

1/2 oz works the best longer cast

I have used  lipless baits alot over the years but have slacked off on them in the past couple of years. I plan on throwing some new ones i've recently purchased this coming saturday in our club tournament. The rattle trap in chrome and blue is my all-time favorite but have had good success on the rattlin raps(same colors as rattle traps) and the cotton cordell(smokey joe is my fav. of the C.C's) The new ones have produced a few lately. I will edit later and tell all ;D
