Shaky and plastic gurus
« on: June 28, 2009, 08:44:34 AM »
Any of you guys using the multi-rig application on your plastics or shaky worms?

I tried it on some to see if it really kept me from losing biats.  I got hung up a few times but didn't get broken off.  However,  I tore the baits all to pieces after a couple of rock hangups.  The acid test will be when I try the dam rip rap.

I don't think I am familiar with the multi-rig application you are talking about.

It was recommended on another forum.  Since I concentrate on rock piles this time of the year, I decided to give it a try.  I have only used it one day so far but plan to use it again on Tuesday night.

JM, have you caught anything on that rig yet??  Never saw it before,..but I would think that with a fat bodied bait like that hula-grub or a senko,..that you'd have a real tough time getting the hook into the fish!   Might work okay for finesse worms & such though!  Just my $.02

I'll see if I can remember to try it next time out.  If anyone else tries it,..let us know how you did with it please!

ps:  I can also envision that it might twist your line like crazy!

JM,..the most snag-resistant rig I ever used in rocks was a nail-weighted worm rigged wacky style with a small o-ring and a drop-shot hook.  When you rig it with the hook fairly far away from the weight,..it almost never snags in rocks (although it's not weedless)!

The fish seemed to like it too! 8)

No I didn't catch anything on it.  I plan to use it Tuesday evening on the rip rap.  It didn't seem to twist the line like the MO shaky rig does.

10-4 on the nait wacky.  I use that around the edge of flooded bushes and it rarely gets hung.  It also catches a lot of fish though I use carpet tacks instead of my (misplaced) nail weights.

So where does the "multi" come in?  Still looks like one jighead and one bait.

Don't know Jack.  The name makes no sense to me.  I didn't invent it.  I'm just trying to find some bait saving technique.  On a bad trip it takes 9 baits to fish the rip rap, on a good one only 3. ;D

Definitely different. might have to have a go for one hump I can not fish with any type of bottom lure, Jig, worm, dropshot, anything, first cast on this spot no matter what angle = lost lure. the last time I fished it I lost 5 lures on 5 cast, 3 jigs, texas rig worm and dropshot.  >:(

That is what I am looking for Joe.  The rip rap eats baits but it is mamby pamby compared to the coffer day.

Tried that multi-rig deal with my flick-shake setup yestarday and i do have to admit that you can throw that thing anywhere and get it back!  I actually threw it into some trees (real trees,..not laydowns) just to see and as long as you don't whip-spin the bait around any branches,..you can jiggle it right back out.   Pretty cool actually!  Only drawback like JM said is that the line does evenually cut through the bait and destroy it,..however if you've got a spot that just cannot be fished with normal baits,..this would be a good bet!

ps: I only had 2 bites,..one was a big crappie and the other one I missed so it may have a pretty poor hookup ratio like I was thinking,..but time will tell on that one!  I will definitely be using it again when faced with somewhere that's ultra-snaggy! 8)

I tried it on the rip rap and it did better than I thought it would (only lost 2 baits).  I only had one fish hit a bait on the rip rap and like J4F I didn't get a good hook set and lost the fish in about 10'.

So the vote is still out.  I hope some of you guys try it and come up with a sure fire way to use it and get hookups.

My shakey setup may not be the best because I use jigheads with a fairly narrow hook-gap,...next time out I'll try a different style with a wider gap and a little stiffer rod that should work out a little better!  :)

ps:  As for the name,..I think it may be because you can use this rig with different plastics (multi-baits),..not just for worms!

On the shaky, I have been using 1/8 and 1/4 poison tail heads rigged with Mustad 3/0 91768BLN (for 1/4) and 91764BR (for 1/8).  I use an IMX 6'6" MH on a bc and an IMX 6'6" M on a spinning reel.  I haven't had hook set problems with them and miss very few fish.  I'll need to get more bites on the m-r to compare.

BTW:  You are prolly right on the name.  The guy in the video didn't give an explanation.

I actually meant to say flick-shake jigheads when I was talking about the narrow gap,...on them, the narrow gap is a plus because it's an open hook,..so a small gap hangs up in cover a little less often than a larger gap would!   My shakey jigs are actually what I was thinking about using because they DO have a larger gap!

I tried this setup once more, recently with the heavier rig and again had one missed hookset on the only bite, however this time it was mostly my fault and I was half asleep at the time! :hammer :hammer :hammer

(Guess I'll keep trying! ;))
